Problems Formating WINDOWS XP

February 18th, 2014

When pressing any key to boot from the cd, I get stuck on the same screen, and nothing happens, except some characters show (check the image’s top)

I tried making a bootable usb, but when booting from it, I only get a blinking “j_” at the bottom of the screen :/
Booting into the windows works fine (loading windows xp from the hdd)

Answer #1
Have you tried downloading a fresh copy of windows xp and burning it to a new disc?
Answer #2
this better help you to solve the situation than this ^
http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/115027-j-just-j-when-attempting-to-boot-from-usb/
Answer #3
I can read there, that it could be tha the bios doesn’t support USB booting. then why is it listed in the bios at all ?
I see “boot from USB HDD, HDD 1,2,3 , 0 is the main hard-drive i guess)
Answer #4
boot to XP and get “Hard Disk Sentinel ” and check the drive for errors
if the health is OK you could try booting to Hiren’s BootCD and see if that works
if it duz, them you can delete all partitions (or just the active one) and then see if the XP disk boots
that trap on the boot screen indicates a HDD problem
Answer #5
I tried to boot from a 100% working USB with bootable windows xp in it, I get:

I tried removing each RAM, but then the pc doesn’t boot up, the pc makes a 5second beep, and then after some seconds, it does again, and nothing happens.
Answer #6
can you boot anything at all other than XP or any OS disk ?
Answer #7
I booted up from hiren’s boot, and did Sentinel scan (which was fast), and I got no error. Everything was green, saying 99% Good, or something.
I can boot from hiren’s boot without a problem. Which tool should I use to delete all my partitions and create new ones?
Answer #8
EASEUS
and be sure to set the 1st one to “active”
Answer #9
is that included in hiren’s 13.1
cause thats the version I’m using.

it’s not, I guess.
check:

Ok, I found: eXtended FDisk that has these options. I deleted all my partitions, and now I’m creating a single one. It has the ‘active’ option too. I will set it now, and try to boot from the win XP cd again. will be back with infos.
Answer #10
BackY, try using “GParted Partition Editor” . It should be in your current version of Hiren, clear off the partition and re-create. As edwood said, the primary partition (should be your C drive) has to be set active. Then try booting from XP disc again?
Answer #11
any but “norton partition magic”, which is old and buggy, will work
Answer #12
The same :/
I waited for the process to complete for about 3-4hours , left the pc on, all night!
Removed all my partitions, and created a single one.. tried to boot from the XP CD/USB, and yet, the same problems.. any other idea ? :/
Answer #13
I waited for the process to complete for about 3-4hours
the partitioning process ?
is the new partition set to “active” (makes it bootable)
eXtended FDisk will show that under “status”
Answer #14
Yes yes, It was set to active automaticaly, after the process was finished.
After I applied the changes, it took me 3-4hours to finish.
Answer #15

you did not select “quick format” then
I tried removing each RAM, but then the pc doesn't boot up, the pc makes a 5second beep, and then after some seconds, it does again, and nothing happens.
all sticks did the same ?
how many sticks in there ?
it should work with just one stick so maybe there a hardware problem
try resetting the BIOS with the jumper (reset_cmos) on the mobo
I tried to boot from a 100% working USB with bootable windows xp
it works with other PC’s ?
will it boot with the hard drive disconnected on your PC ?
Answer #16
Since he’s creating a new partition, why not remove the boot sector of the drive altogether. You would benefit to do a low level format and thus erase the zero sector and/or master boot record of your primary drive altogether, then proceed to partition and install the OS afterwords.
You can get those tools to perform the action from the drive manufacturers website, typically.
This may not fix the 5sec beep codes you are experiencing though.
You may have more than one problem happening at the same time during the boot sequence. A clean drive is a good place to start but its not the entire cure.
Answer #17
I tried to boot from the usb without the HDD, the same happens.
I tried the cmos reset too.
ps; there was no ‘quick format’ option for me when I did the partition thing on the hdd :/
after I changed the settings, I hit ESC, and it asked me wether I wanna apply the changes, I did, and thats all..
Answer #18
Not to be picky, but HDD are already formatted NTFS, the idea that windows formats when installing is a joke and was designed when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
When you install an OS you erase the drive with zero fill, use one of the erase on Hirens boot cd. You just can’t copy a OS onto a USB and have it boot, the boot sector must be written, you need to use windows USB tool.
If you got the OS from a warez site, some are bad and won’t boot, some disks won’t boot. If you booted from Hirens, then its the disk you have the OS on and not your PC.

This is what is needed if you want to load from a USB.
Answer #20
Just to be a wise AS, you don’t format XP, you format HDD’s. You posted formatting XP.
Answer #21

It can’t be, cause I’ve problems with the usb formating process too. Plus that, I allways use that cd-rom on other computers.
Answer #25
back to the memory
how many sticks do you have installed ?
and if you try them one @ a time you get an error ?
run memtest on herins to check them
Answer #26
‘Disconnect’ -everything- inside and outside your PC Box; except 1 known working hdd, monitor, mouse, and keyboard. That includes any cdroms, dvd roms, external usb drives, etc.
Keep 1 stick of ram in a slot at a time. Then you can rotate memory sticks before booting each time.
Always revert to default minimal hardware requirements to limit the amount of connected devices for troubleshooting purposes.
* I should add that you may have to edit the bios boot settings to reflect the changes, depending on the previous expected default page parameters.
Answer #27
I’ve two sticks of ram installed, I will now try the SSH’s suggestions, they seem logical to get to the error.
But any idea on how to avoid that beep sound after I remove any of the RAMs ?
Answer #28
The beep sounds are an error code of a failed device, driver or component in expected operation in most cases.
If you have your original mobo manual handy…check the back of its info for troubleshooting tips for specific hardware beep code descriptions…for example.
* EDIT: In the bios you can choose to ignore the keyboard errors during a reboot and then disconnect it completely to see if its hanging the system.
(whenever unplugging hardware its wise to disconnect the AC power source first)
Edit: USB input devices are Hot Swappable.
