Seagate External Hard drive Keeps crashing ?

January 23rd, 2020

Hello,
I’ve got a seagate ST315005 41AS USB Device (1500 GB, 5900 RPM, SATA-II) and everytime I try to copy a file onto it it keeps crashing,
but playing videos or instaling is goin smoothly. It only crashes when I copy onto it (see video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hlt-l0FIfRk ).
I’ve got a Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium OS and all drivers are up to date. I already tryed to plug it into another port and there is the same problem and I tryed another wire (cable) to connect it, and it still keeps crashing. I’ve instaled seatools and runned a disk test, but it sayed that the dist itselve is OK and firmware is up to date aswell. So now I am out of ideas and thats why I’m posting here. And just to be accurate, one file out of 10 copyes onto it like this : It is copying then it laggs, after a few seconds it finishes.
Does anyone know that’s the problem, please ?
Additional Details
It is not usb powered, its connected separately to a power source, Im copying onto it and there is 700Gb left free. My RAM size is 8Gb.

Answer #1
by “crash” you mean that the drive disappears, then reappears it sounds like you are not getting enuf power to the drive
try going into your device mgr/usb root hubs and disable power mgt
might be a problem with the USB enclosure
Answer #2
sorry, but I dont rly understand what u mean by goin into the root hubs Could u explain it more ? Btw the hard drive is getting electricity separately, not trough the usb port.
Oh and my old case broke, so i putted the seagate drive into a never one, could that cause the power supply problem ?
But there also the problem that on other PC’s it works normally.
Answer #3
A disappearing USB device is almost always a power issue.
Normally you see this happen when the external power adapter is giving up. Given that you have moved to a new case, the power adapter might be short on the required wattage requirements. The other PC’s maybe supplying the additional power required through the usb port – the one you are using may not be doing so.
Per your question regarding the root … In your device manager (system properties / device manager), expand the “universal serial bus controllers”. doube-click each one that has “hub” in its name and click the power management tab. Make sure that you have both options unselected.
My guess however, is that it isn’t power management but is related to the usb port you are using. First, try connecting the drive to different usb ports. Different ports may have different power associated with them. I know on my laptop for example, the 3 ports have different milliamp outputs. Double-clicking on the root hub and selecting the power tab will show you the details.
Answer #4
Any of them worked, I tried both methods, and still keeps “crashing”.
Answer #5
Well …
If the drive is working on other computers, it isn’t the drive. There are no third-party drivers so it won’t be a driver issue.
The USB cable – are you using the one from the old case or the new one. All USB cables are not the same in their specs.
Answer #6
I use the one from the new case, and I already tryed and bought a new one, but still no change. btw thx for help
Answer #7
Could it be that the case itselve broke down, and is just working with 50% ? (cause I sayed its a newer one, but still its bout a year old)
Answer #8
Could it be that the case itselve broke down
not likely as it works on other PC’s
the new case have a new power supply ?
Answer #9
Yes, but i’m not sure if it provides enough energy. Cause I used the drive on other PC’s but never copyed sutch big files, like at home.
Answer #10
can you swap the “new case/power supply” for another one ?
Answer #11
dont think its possible, cause the new power suply has got a rly unique connector. But ill try to find something < but that will be probably tomorow.
Answer #12
can you return it for another one ?
Answer #13
I dont think so ill just try to gain another powersource or a powered usbHUB
Answer #14
Have you tried connecting it to a rear USB port?
Front ones have a shared power source, Which means that if you connect multiple devices at once, Some of em
could get underpowered! Also, Have a look at windows event viewer (control panel>administrative tools)
and look for errors/warnings, It may shed some light on this. Have you considered the possibility that the problem is actually with your internal HDD? Clearly, You are copying files either to or from it, And if it has a problem, Then maybe the OS reaction
is to power off the external! Better make sure that your internal HDD is healthy as well!

I’ll use my notebook and I tryed all ports.
But in the event viewer I got a error like this >
Log Name: System

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2.
Answer #16
Ok I’ve got the solution, it was rly a power supply error. Cause I bought a newer adapter for this type of hard drive, which provades more energy and the problem is gone.
Answer #17
well, more power to ya !
problem is gone
good to hear !
Answer #18
Really THANKS for the advice
Answer #19
i have dealt with this problem before , this is what worked for me – i went to my motherboard manufacturer web site ( in my case gigabyte ) and downloaded the latest bios then installed it via gigabyte software – fixed the problem instantly and hasn’t been a problem since ( the drive would suddenly disappear and when it was showing i could not copy anything as op said it would start then slow right down to almost nothing ) – this might not fix your problem but it did mine – does your external HDD have its own power source ? if it does your issue is not power ( roberto i like your response but the op would have more problems booting and in general operation of the internal HDD than what is being said )
Answer #20
Yeh ive also had similar issues with an external hard drive and a sata ide hd docking station. The solution i found was to install a pci usb card internally now all bits of kit work like a charm
