External hard drive help

July 23rd, 2013

My laptop has stopped picking up my external hard drive, i thought it might of been the caddy so i plugged into pc and it worked fine there.
What could be the problem?

Answer #1
Clearly if it works as-is and not with the enclosure then the problem is with the enclosure, Buy a new one.
Answer #2
no mate, i plug the caddy into pc and it works fine, plug it into laptop and it doesnt work, its a problem with the laptop
Answer #3
I see, I must’ve misunderstood as I thought you hooked it up directly.
Is the ext HDD the only USB device connected to the laptop? If not, Try disconnecting the others, Also
try another USB port if that doesn’t work. Do other USB devices (I.E a flash drive/mp3 player) work
with it?
Answer #4
same on all usb ports, but usb ports are fine as my usb stick works in all of them
Answer #5
Do both computers run Windows? And if so, Which version/service pack in particular?
Is the file system on the ext hdd NTFS?
What it’s capacity?
Answer #6
plug a flash drive into a port on the laptop then check the “USB root hub” entries in device mgr under “USB controllers”
under “properties” find the one that shows the flash drive under “Power” (should say “USB mass storage device”)
then hit “power mgt” tab and disable/un-tic “Allow the computer to turn off …” and hit OK
then unplug the flash drive and try the hard drive in the same port
