External Hard Drive
August 1st, 2013
I have just bought a new 750gb external as my old one was filling up
i am currently borrowing my cousins internal hard drive as i am out of work and cant afford one yet as the internals are abit pricey.
my question is if i copy everything over to my new external can i take the casing of the old external hard drive and use it as an internal ?
Yes.
ok i have this hard drive it should work my pc is fairly new so im guessing it supports sata

so if i take it out of its casing i can use it as an internal hard drive install windows 7 back on it etc and it should work fine ? and i use my new external in my old externals place ?

yes,
and i use my new external in my old externals place ?
I did not follow. what is your old external now .
Simply saying you remove the drive and plug it into your PC and it becomes a normal hard drive which will work as an internal drive.
Didn’t get the other question, can you elaborate
ok i just bought a new samsung 750gb hard drive, the internal i have at the moment is my cousins but he needs it back asap, atm i have 2 externals the one i showed you above and the one i just bought today
if i give my cousin his old internal back and use my old external as a hard drive it will work ?
If the drive has SATA connections on it, some don’t (no idea about that model, never taken one apart).
yes it should work.
Have you only got 1 internal HDD (your cousins) in your computer ?
If so then you are going to have to put an operating system on it first.
If you have 2 internal Hard Drives already inside (cousins and 1 of your own) then providing your own is the one with an operating system it should work fine as a secondary
internals are abit pricey.
internals are cheaper!
Just buy a rack for the internal!
Yes, internals are cheaper! It is better you buy an internal because by removing the drive from the external you’d void the warranty!
But it CAN work.
I’ll repeat what I said above
If the drive has SATA connections on it, some don't
You won’t know until you open the case. Some have the USB port directly on the drive with no SATA connectors.

Yes. You may need to go in to disk management and just allow it to work. But yes it will work.
it worked fine thanks guys

Can you edit the topic title to include [solved] so that people who are providing help no longer need to open the thread

Welcome Mate,
Do keep the casing which the original HDD came in.
It can come handy some time
