What is the best overall external hard drive?
How long do most external hard drives last?

They’re all about the same really. People have varying opinions about brands, but in my experience Seagate, WD and Maxtor give the same sort of life and performance. Keep it safe by not dropping it, getting it wet or leaving it in a very hot or cold place.

My suggestion – GET ONE WITH OUT A LOT OF PLUGINS. I have one that plugs into the wall and its a big hassle, but my friend has one that gets power off of usb and its so much more compact and better.

Iv been using the Seagate FreeAgent desktop Drive an its really worth the money imo

Just remember to keep it at a place where there are no chances for it to fall and Handle with care, also remeber to safely remove Hardrive whenever removing the drive

i currently have an external harddrive(toshiba). Its actually a laptop harddrive. I bought the closure seperately and inserted the hardrive in it(its damn easy).
Beleive me, if you cant gaurantee the hard drive’s safety, then buy a toshiba HDD with a separate enclosure. I removed the harddrive(without safely remove hardware, move it, dropped it twice or thrice) But Still!! its works like a charm!!

Toshiba make excellent quality hardware, but they only do 1.8″ and 2.5″… very limited in space. The current limit is 200gb and they’re not cheap. I can get 3.5″ 400gb WD drive and enclosure for less than the 2.5″ 200gb drive on it’s own… If you don’t want extreme portability then 3.5″ is fine.

ive got a wd passport which i love, been reliable so far
ive got 3 my books, 2 1TiB and 1 500GiB and theyve been reliable
ive got a 750 seagate freeagent which has been reliable
those are about teh only ones that i would go with
all of the rest are really risky imo
i had this lasonic one once, i think thats what it was called and it pooped out on me after a couple months, lost all mah :[
