i’m looking at getting the xbox modded(professionally) for playing copies
just wondering
a. do i have to download region specific pal or ntsc after it’s modded or will it play any xbox game
b. how long will the mod last if i stay off xbox live and do i have to stay off xbox live

Depends how your getting it modded…
If your just flashing the DVD Drive, then YES you will have to download region specific games.
If your having your Xbox JTAGGED, then NO you will not have to download region specific games.
If your modding your xbox, it would be best to stay offline altogether.

will they be screwed if a game updates firmware
I’m unsure about the PS3 modifications and how far along they have come. I have more experience with the xbox.
Flashing the DVD Drive:
You’ll be ok to play copied games… but due to the new XGD3 games, the filesize of the games are larger than your average dual layer disc… so in order to burn the games, you will need a specific dvd writer, and certain discs (not cheapy ones)
However, the only problem with this is… newer games may include a new dashboard firmware… which means you will have to update the dashboard….. This isn’t normally a problem, but the previous update flashed the DVD drive back to standard…. So this means you will have to RE-MOD your drive.
Emulate the games with “xk3y”:
I don’t have much experience with this, but I believe you need two things… The xk3y, and a external hard drive.
You place the games on your external hard drive, and the xk3y connects to your xbox and hard drive via USB. It basically emulates the game.
OLD JTAG Method:
In order to get this working you will need an xbox on a rather old firmware – before 9199 I think.
Again you will need a external hard drive to benefit most from this.
Region Free Console, ability to download and play all XBLA games for free, as well as install old console emulators (mega drive / NES / SNES etc) and play old games.
NEW JTAG Method:
Not to sure about this… it’s basically called the REBOOT GLITCH or something…. I don’t know how far along this is.
Personally I would either research xk3y or the OLD JTAG METHOD (if you have a compatible console)
I’m sure if I’m wrong about something, someone will come along and correct me.

Yes ifit is a new xbox you must only download games of your rejoin.
b. how long will the mod last if i stay off xbox live and do i have to stay off xbox live
Well it has nothing to do with xbox live tbh
most new game disc have an update with them, you cannot play the game till the update is applied.
Apply the Update and your mod is gone..
Also you need the latest version for online too.
if the jtag hack is applied correctly then the xbox wont update the dash from games discs.
flashing the dvd in the box allows region free gaming and can be done to any modal drive but the method changes.
To find out which if any of the hacks can be done we need to know 1).mfg date (on a label under the Xbox) 2). dash system version and 3). does it have HDMI output or not?

The “region hack” so to speak, is programmed into the NAND.
Which can only be done if your JTAGGING your console.

If this was avaible why would people yet download diffrent NTSC and PAL Games.
I have asked at JF Too, they were like oryl, link us to it, cause last we checked we did not make it.

the mod is gone if you stick in a new disk and update?
the guy who’s doing it said firmware updates won’t affect the mod?
but he said I have to use region specific games
