How would you organize a 3 TB movie drive?

February 7th, 2020

I have a 3 TB hard drive, which I use as a external for movie storage.
Problem is… it’s filled with movies of all genres, an there is absolutely no organization, I would like to split movies into separate categories, like Comedy, Action, Sci-fi, etc…. is there a good system for movie organization?
I was thinking about, probably custom folders, being a lot of movies vary in genres, like romance, or romance/comedy, an perhaps thrillers, or even action/thrillers.
I am just looking to create a good movie browsing system, being I have so many.
Any thoughts would be helpful.

Answer #1
I can’t think of any program, so you’d have to manually move each file. I sort movies by directors.
Answer #2
Xbmc organises your movie library into categorised genre.

MP4 Tagging FTW just dump them all into a movies folder and let the player or windows explorer do all the organizing for you based on actor genere etc. This dosnt require your clients to download the information from the internet every time.
You can also use a dnla server like plex or twonky to orginise the files based on the tags for clients that don’t support reading tags from files.
Its similar to MP3 tagging.
Whichever method you use make sure you format with a large cluster size 64kb REFS preferably 32kb pre windows 8/server 2012 it will save space on this drive where you have just large files

It’s a media centre although it also organises your movie library.
Answer #6
I’d manually organize them by Country of origin, then Genre, then Title.

Its not an application its the same way your music is tagged ie xml embedded in the movie file itself.
MetaX is one such program that can write the tags. The tags can then be read by software that supports reading tags to arrange the movies by year or by actor etc just like an mp3 collection.
The advantages of this method are
-No internet bandwidth is wasted by clients downloading the poster and info
-Views can be created based on any tag eg arrange movies by year
-No software needed for clients just browse the network share and arrange based on the tag they want

It look like the video file are ultimately tagged an read from your HD, if a program is displaying the layout like it is, then how did you do it?
Think you could give me some tips on your layout, I am a bit of a newb.
What would I have to do first?
Answer #9

It look like the video file are ultimately tagged an read from your HD, if a program is displaying the layout like it is, then how did you do it?

Its not a program its bog standard windows explorer
The process is Tag the files with metax or mp3 tag > Dump the file into the movie folder > Group as year or genre or actor etc.
What you have to do depends on your collection if its already remixed to mp4 you just need to tag the files with metax (newer versions can apparently tag mkv but I don’t know how much support it has with players and explorer)

What did you use (metax or mp3 tag)? An is it a freeware, or would I have to find a app for said program you used???
Also, I have a lot of AVI an MKV formats, will it work with those?

Answer #14
Search for it on filestube there are keygens, and no it has to be mp4 to write tags for those files you’d need to do the shortcut trick used or remux
Answer #15
i don’t or burn to disk
Answer #16
Can I create MP4s with dual audio and subtitles?
Answer #17
Just alphabetically, and know all the movies you have Don’t keep random rubbish that you need to sort in order to know what it is.

Ooook I managed to find a working version of MetaX 2.29 with a working keygen
I did managed to toy around with the program for a while, an tagged my first movie Image
What is unfortunate about this program is, it’s limited to only two formats (MP4/M4V) thou it did appear to tag the movie file it’s self nicely, I would have preferred that the program had tagged the actual folder the movie is inside being as I like to keep on hand the releaser (25th Hour 2002 DVDRip H264 AAC-BeLLBoY (Kingdom-Release))of said movie, as the title of my movie is shown in my above screenshot, just in case I would like to search for that same movie ripped by said releaser for someone else, also… I tend to have subs on hand for a majority of my movies (like shown above), so a folder is always the norm for my movie files.
Another thing that’s unfortunate, thou I do have a assortment of MP4 movie files, MKV containers are mainly what populate my movie collection, followed by AVI, which the (MetaX) program does not support.
It would have been so much easier if the program actually tagged the folder of the movie or TV series with a iconic poster, this way the folder of the movie would look like this Image
***EDIT***
Ooook… I actually found a way to create a movie poster folder icon for your movies in question Image
movie folder is now a actual poster You use this site to convert your poster image to a (.ico)
http://iconverticons.com/online/
Then right CLICK on your folder an customize the folder icon

A lot of work is right
But I did manage to create icons for a a lot of my movie folders according to genre, thou I am not done yet.
I’d figured if I started the project. I’d might as well finish.
This is what I’ve accomplished so far.

I was planning on giving each movie folder a background

As pretty as it would look, I figured it would be too much work.
As much as I love your viewing method “”, I’d figure it would be as much work, if not more, converting MKV (which I have tons of) to MP4, so they could be used in MetaX, than the work I am doing now.
I love you guys viewing method, an will keep it in mind

I have a quick question… what does remuxing do exactly?
Answer #23
repackages the streams in a different container.
Answer #24
repackages the streams in a different container.
But does the copied or remuxed container depreciate in quality in way from the original container you are coping from?
Answer #25
no only if you transcode
