Help Building A New Computer

August 5th, 2016

Hi, I am building a new computer. I was wondering if you could help me with the choices, whether they are worthy or not.
These are the stuff I have already brought:
- XFX 4870 1Gb DDR5 HD
- Cooler Master Silent Pro 600Watt
- Scythe Mugen 2
- Artic Cooling MX-2
- Logitech MX Revolution Mouse
- Microsoft Sidewinder X6 Keyboard
- Dell 22" 1680x1050 resolution screen
- Regular Speakers
- Windows 7 Ultimate x64

These are what I am hoping to buy:
- Intel i7 920 CPU (just wondering whats the difference of retail and OEM for my spec)
- ASUS P6t Deluxe (wondering the difference between V1 and V2. Whats your opinions of what one I should buy)
- OCZ Gold XTC 6Gb DDR301600Mhz (3x2Gb) (not sure whether to get the CL7 or CL8, can you guys clarify the difference)
- Coolermaster HAF 932 Full Tower Case - No PSU
- 1 or 2 TB Hard Drive at something like 7200Rpm (Just dont know what the difference in IDE and SATA is and which would be better)

Thanks for reading, to sum up can you please give me your views on these, if they would work together or not. Also could you answer the bracketed questions for me. If anyone wanted to know this computer will mostly be used for general use, some WoW use, some photoshopping and some general video watching and game playing.
Please reply with your views and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all

Answer #2
hv u checked 5770 instead of 4870?
Answer #3
Ye…I would have got that but the problem is thats the section I already brought …I am not loaded Can’t afford to buy a new one…also I read around and well seems as though the 4870 is pretty much more than enough for what I am gonna be throwing at it Thanks for the observation. Also forgot to mention I am not a person that buys new computers everyday…they usually last at least 3 years
Answer #4
just wondering whats the difference of retail and OEM for my spec
Retail versions of a processor (also known as Boxed editions) are provided with a fan and heatsink. Given the fact that you owe a Scythe Mugen 2, you’re probably better off buying the OEM version, and save a few dollars. It also shortens your warranty by a bit.
Just dont know what the difference in IDE and SATA is and which would be better
The SATA interface is newer, it can provide a larger datastream trough the same connection, you definitely want to get a SATA-II harddisk.
Answer #5
I am thinking of building a simular rig, can you add the overall price please?
Answer #6
The best place to Buy all of this stuff from the U.K. is definatly ‘eBuyer’ . Its service is so fast and stuff can be very cheap too. we looking at around 400 for what you want to buy ?
For your harddrive choose SATA. They can be really cheap these days 1TB can be found for about 50 – 60
I like you case, but with that price range you could find something even more attractive at ebuyer.
Have a look

Hi, I like what you have already bought. For the things you are hoping to buy:
Core i7 920 – OEM doesn’t come with the box and cpu cooler, but that doesn’t matter as you are buying a 3rd party cooler. So OEM is a good option if you save money.
P6t Deluxe, I have this board V1, the difference between v1 and v2 is that v2 does not have SAS hard drive connector, but it is not needed for regular peoples setups.
OCZ ram, nice choice, the difference is that cl7 is faster than cl8. (The lower the number the better) But the difference with that kind of speed is unnoticable, so just buy the cheapest. I have CL8 ram and its fine.
Buy SATA components, not IDE, IDE is older and slower than sata, plus the p6t deluxe only has 1 IDE port compared to 6 sata ports.
Don’t buy a 2tb 7200rpm hard drive. Get a 1tb or even 750gb and you can always buy anothera hard drive as a storage drive when you need to.
I got my components (i7 920, P6T Deluxe, GTX 260, 850W PSU, 6GB Patriot Viper 1600mhz, Noctua cpu cooler) from these websites:
www.ebuyer.com
www.scan.co.uk
www.overclockers.co.uk

They are all based in the UK and have good customer support whenever I’ve contacted them.
Hope I helped
EDIT: IMPORTANT: Make sure you buy the D0 stepping version of the i7 920, that one can be easily overclocked to 4ghz with your cpu cooler. Here it is on overclockers and scan: (Haven’t included Ebuyer as they cannot guarantee you will receive the D0 version)

Answer #11

What i meant by loaded was I cannot afford to dump or resell at lower price something I have already bought. Whereas something I havent yet bought I would be willing to pay more and get better use out of it

This is for :
Ye, I saw those websites, I have pretty much found the places I am gonna buy the stuff:
- i7 920 OEM - 197.90 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/161171
- ASUS P6t Deluxe V2 - 198.30 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/159455

EDIT: As shown for the processor the Ebuyer one confirms it to be DO Stepping...thanks for making be aware though

and the others are:
– XFX 4870 – 107.52 http://www.dabs.com/products/xfx-ati-radeon-4870-hd-750mhz-1gb-pci-express-dvi-lite-63VZ.html
– CM Silent Pro 600watt – 70.91 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/160256
– Mugen 2- 36.56 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/158603
– AC MX-2- 4.09 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/135613
– Logitech MX Revolution – 49.98 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/117334
– Sidewinder X6- 39.62 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/148294
Overall if you just want the computer system without the mouse, keyboard, case etc. it adds up to….. 807.94
Thats with Processor, Mobo, RAM, HDD, GFX, PSU, CPU Cooler, Thermal Paste
But with the keyboard, mouse, case etc The grand total would be …. 1003.55
in all honesty for that price, its one heck of a computer…then I can save up and maybe in like a year or so get a crossfire GFX (new one or just another 4870)
Answer #14
Another questions guys….I havent bought some of those stuff yet, but since no one really complained…those are the stuff I will buy….
Just that question…In England, UK Do Computers prices go down? Especially those section of components? Or do they stay same or get higher?
Answer #15
nice quadruple post. yeah the prices go down over time…
Answer #16
beh not time…cos well thats obvious…but I mean like after christmas….since generally I notice there are huge sales on boxing day…just wondering if it also goes with computer products.
Answer #17
I doubt that the main components will go down like the processor and the motherboard, however the perphirals like the keyboard, mouse, perhaps even the case, they would go down, unfortunately you have already bought the things that go down. The core components are really competitive, and are at the lowest price they can get most of the time.
Answer #18
i see ok…thanks for the clarification….I guess I will just buy them in a week or 2
Answer #19
get rams with tighter timings(timing = latencies)
ie cl7>cl8>cl9
Answer #20
http://www.dabs.com/products/ocz-technology-ocz-ddr3-triple-channel-6gb-kit-5J68.html
This is the RAM I am most likely to buy and it is on a CL 8 8 8, which I hear is pretty good, I know CL7’s are better BUT I dont reckon with the use that I will have from the computer I will notice the difference! Also its like 40-50 more for CL7 ones…which for a un-noticeable upgrade for me isn’t really worth buying
Thanks for the info though
Answer #21
Cool PC! Buy it
Answer #22
Yup…this will be my first pc since 3 or so years ago hopefully it will last at least 3 years

You will shave a good few bucks of the price by shopping at www.scan.co.uk and using the “today only” tab on the site.
Also free delivery if you have over 10 posts on certain forums like hexus. You could save another chunk by opting for a cheaper motherboard. The p6t Deluxe v2 is fantastic and i use it myself but unless you are a enthusiast overclocker then you don’t need it atall and will get the exact same froma cheaper board. If you are not going to overclock atall and not planning on using multi gpu for sli/xfire.
You will be better off saving cash by getting a 1156 socket system that will be faster at stock speeds. but inferior overclocking performance and inferior multi gpu performance and duel channel ram rather than tripple.
Answer #26
I think I am going to Overclock it, and Eventually I will get a Crossfire.
Answer #27
then why a 4870 ? why not a 5770 ?
Answer #28
I think I am going to Overclock it, and Eventually I will get a Crossfire.
Then 1366 system all the way. You could stiull save a good chunk on the motherboard and overclock well.
Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R will do the same job for you and save you 65.
As mentioned you will also save cash by shopping with scan and using the today only tab. You will find pretty much every item discounted on most days.
Answer #29

4870 is because I bought it before I was going to buy a completly new computer and wanted it to work on my current one….but since I am getting a completly new computer I have to stick with that GFX, until like 1 year or so time which I may go a new ATI crossfire model.
