Externally adding a RAM & a GFX card to my laptop

November 29th, 2013

okay…so…here goes…
I’ve a desktop with a Nvidia 9600GT gfx card and I was thinking if I could add it to my laptop externally cause I don’t wanna spend more bucks to get a new one for my laptop…
also…my laptop supports only 4GB of RAM in 2 slots and when i got this laptop a couple of yrs back I took 3GB(2+1) by default…now I wanna upgrade it to 4GB without wasting the 1GB that I already have so I was thinking if I can add another 1GB of RAM externally too…
any suggestions/help/support is appreciated…
thanks in advance guys

I’ve got only 2 slots and 2 pieces of RAM are already in there…a 2GB and 1GB…so I wanna add another 1GB without wasting any of the RAM pieces that are already in…any solutions? :S

It really depends on the PCI slot and the DDR compatibility, be sure to check both of those.
DDR2 is dirt cheap anyway (assuming that it’s running DDR2).
Also, remember that some x86 (32-bit) Operating systems only support a maximum of 4GB, only 64-Bit Operating systems/processors support a higher RAM usage, so if you’re using W7 Starter this will have no affect. Hope this helps.

You need to buy another 2GB stick identical to the current 2GB stick and put that where the 1GB stick is, then sell the 1GB stick so its not “wasted”.

Lol, that’s very interesting, but a lot of work to avoid using a desktop.

you’re ½ right !
but you can use win7 “readyboost” and add a flash drive to use as ram
slower than normal ram tho

yeah…thanks for the info guys…it looks like there’s no point trying to add a RAM externally…I’ll do a little more research about adding a GFX card externally…and take a look at that ViDock as suggested by “edwoodweb”
also, thanks a lot Wise-San…my laptop is actually supporting 8GB…did a little more survey considering your point

There is a nice little flash drive around at the moment fairly reasonably priced you can use for this, I got a couple to use in my car as I snapped the longer ones with the armrest
You can plug this into a lappy and forget it’s even there.
Sandisk Cruzer Fit (you can get them a fair bit cheaper than this if you look around)
