[BUILT]Building a new PC

January 17th, 2023

Hey mates,
I’m looking to build a good system that can handle ripping blu-rays, encoding, gaming & I want it to handle high graphics even 3D movies/games with an LED 3D monitor. Along with an SSD around 100GB. I’d like a 8GB DDR3 RAM as well.
Just need your advice about what brand should I get of each part. I’m looking for performance. Budget :
2000$ probably won’t reach that but let’s see what you guys got
& Thanks a lot! Cheers~

Answer #1
Where are you from and is your budget in USD?
Answer #2
I’m from Texas, Arlington to be specific. Just moved there actually & yeah budget in USD.
Answer #3
I’d start with an i7 950 from MicroCenter. That’ll run ya $230, you’ll have another $200 in a motherboard, $300 in 12GB of memory, $400-$450 in a pair of GTX460s for SLI, $200 for a pair of 40GB Intel SSDs for RAID0, $150-$200 in a case, $100-$150 for a power supply, $300 for 3 2TB drives for storage. That puts you right around $2k for one bad ass setup.
Answer #4
Alright does newegg work for my area? if it does could you be specific about the case, motherboard, brand of RAM, brand of internal storage & why a pair of 40GB SSDs while there is an 80GB one? Also is the Crucial SSD better than intel’s? I suck at reading benchmarks so here you go :

Answer #5
The CPU I suggested is much more expensive at NewEgg, that’s why I suggested MicroCenter.
I suggested a pair of SSDs because two drives in RAID0 (especially SSDs) are much faster than just a single drive of the same capacity.
Answer #6
But don’t you think 40GBs SSDs are a little too small for the system files, other programs & games? And which case, RAM, motherboard, internal storage ( besides the SSDs ) should I get? And are a pair of GTX460s better than a GTX295?
And what do you think about the benchmark readings? Crucial or intel?
Answer #7
You don’t think 80GB will be enough for a Windows install? Win7 takes up ~21GB…you plan on having more than 60GB of programs?
And yes, lol, a pair of GTX460s in SLI pwn a GTX295.

Just a question how close would 2 way sli gtx 460s vs one ati 5970?
Answer #10

Hell, for the price of a 5970 you could do a 3 way SLI with the GTX460 for the same price.

yeah bro 5970s are beast which would u reccomend 3 460s or a 5970
Answer #12
Since a pair of 460s outperform a single 5970 I’d say that three of them for the same price as the 5970 is a no brainer.
Answer #13
Really a pair does? That’s awesome
Answer #14
Did you look at the benchmark I linked to?
Answer #15

You can’t do triple SLI with GTX 460s
Try this. You’ll be hard put to find a better config for the money. You can save some cash getting what you can find off this list from Microcenter. And yes it’s a blue color theme

You might want to hold off a bit though as Intel is releasing some new SSDs pretty soon
Answer #16
Personally a SLI setup with 2 460’s is a good buy.

Can only SLI 460s cant TRI them unfortunately, so i’d say the 5970 easily
And dreams build he put together, I’d change the Power supply to something like the Corsair 850tx at the least! Nxt sucks!… As for graphic cards.. Go with some SLI 460’s.. these cards dominate.. I’ll post some benchies up when i get some time..

I'll post some benchies up when i get some time..Nah. The brand name has got little to do with the quality. The OEM is everything. NZXT’s HALE 90 series are highly regarded nowadays. The 850TX is also not modular and you can get a lot better 850W PSUs for the money it asks you for.
For your information, here’s the best <$200 1000W PSUs currently available
NZXT HALE90 1000
ABS SL1050 (cheaper Enermax 1050W)
Antec TPQ-1000
Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 1000
Silverstone Strider 1000
Zalman ZM1000

Here’s another option:

For the ~ $300 difference, you can choose whatever case and after-market CPU cooler you like. The Noctua that D r e a M chose is very nice but very big, too. It can cause problems when using tall memory modules.
Answer #20
It can cause problems when using tall memory modules.
Indeed, but it will accommodate the G.Skill Ripjaws I’ve selected easily. Fwiw I would get the Thermalright Silver Arrow if available but it’s not on Newegg
Answer #21
Would a GTX480 SLI beat 460 SLI?
& is this the gtx480 ?

Answer #22
Would a GTX480 SLI beat 460 SLI?
A single GTX 480 would give you higher minimum fps, lower average and lower maximum fps. A GTX 480 SLI would obviously be a lot faster but it’s not really possible with your budget
The GTX 470 SLI I’ve picked out is pretty much optimal for your budget

I’m probably going for your set because where ever I search it seems at least the 2nd best so it’s right.
But do you think the i7 980x would work with that set instead if the 950?
I’m gonna do some search around for more options before getting anything though.
Answer #24

The 980x alone is $1000. Unless you got a budget of $3000 you can forget about that

Assume I had that, would it work? Is it gonna be any different in performance?
Also I’d like to add 2GBs to make it 8GBs RAM, possible?
Answer #26

Erm well yes if you use applications that benefit from multithreading such as video encoding, folding and extensive graphical work. Apart from that, not really. It will lengthen your epeen if that matters to you.
Also I'd like to add 2GBs to make it 8GBs RAM, possible?Sure it will work fine. However it will work in dual channel mode. Just make sure to get a 2GB stick of the exact same model. If I were you I would get two 2x2GB kits for 8GB. The x58 chipset is designed for triple channel memory so unless you’re sure you’ll need the 8GB you’ll have a technically faster setup with 6GB (3x2GB). The next upgrade if you want triple channel is 12GB (6x2GB).

Yes, it will work! That MB has a 1366 socket.
Answer #28
Alright thanks a lot mates, got what I need.
Just gonna replace the 6GB RAM with a 6x2GB
& gonna stick to the i7 950.
Seems like a beast build to me, hopefully it will act like one when it’s built.
Cheers mates~
