new router, slow browsing, frequant disconnection
January 28th, 2020
i just bought a router so that i could have wireless in the apartment. my main PC is hardwired to the router.
when i turn on my PC, it doesn’t connect all the time, even though my router says it’s connected. if i unplug my PC’s cable from the router and plug it back in, it usually connects. sometimes i have to restart the router. this also happens if my PC sits a long time without using the connection.
i am also experiencing lags while browsing. speedtest shows the same speed as usual, and when downloading from rapidshare the speed is just fine. but i get long delays connecting to websites. without the router, everything works fine.
router is a baisc (cheap) Belkin G Wireless. firmware is up to date.
any ideas?
Its your router it hasnt been set up the right way, its not plug and play there will be some settings you need
to make and you will need to password protect your router
or everone and their neighbors will be using your internet connection, use the install CD and rerun the setup app, or type
your make and model into Google you will find a link to the homesite of the router and they will walk through the setup
But get that password on there, WPA or WPA2 Wi-Fi Protected Access
i have WPA2 security set up already.
what does securing my wireless have to do with slow browsing on my PC which is connected directly to my router?

you didnt say you had WPA2 set up and what would be a lost of speed say for instance you installed your WI-FI router and it was wide open for everone to see and 1-2 people got a new laptop say for X-Mas and open them up and HEY look a free internet connection, lets go download movies, your coneection suffers,
P/S I have 3 machines connected to my router and an X-Box plus 2 laptops, my connection suffers
no, my connection is secure, and i am certain that nobody else is using my connection.
plus my badwidth is fine. like i said, i can max it out when downloading from rapidshare. it’s just standard web browsing that is slow.
Here I found this troubale shooting page for your router, make sure the settings are for the IP are right, they show how to change them if not

i have PPPOE broadband. i don't need a modem - there is just a CAT5 cable coming into my apartment that i plug directly into my computer. i supply a username and password and go online.
Hi mate.
Good day.
have you checked and confirmed that your router configuration is correct?
so, where does u actually supply a username n password to go online when you directly connect to your pc from the CAT5 cable?
next, if you do ipconfig /all without using your router, what kind of IP did u get? a public or private ip?
u may try to play around with the configuration of your router. maybe instead of using PPPoE as the connection, u can change it to static ip(refer to the ipconfig /all output result above) because you just need to put in your username n password to connect, you dont need your ADSL (RJ-11) port rite? Hope i helped.
i have to use PPPoE, it’s the only way i can connect. when not using a router, i set up a dialup connection. with the router, it’s configured for PPPoE.
most of the time things work ok, i just have more lags and lost connections when using my router than when not using it, that’s all.
then i guess it has nothing to do with your configuration since u only experience intermittent connection while browsing and not while downloading from RS or do a speedtest.
sorry i could not help you.
any other ideas?
still looking for suggestions…
Try changing the channel from the wireless settings,Enable turbo mode too , Also make sure its not set
to use 802.11g LRS mode as it can hinder performance , If no dice then try upgrading the firmware
thanks for the ideas, but since the problems also occur with my hard-wired PC, i’m not sure these changes will help much.
firmware is up to date.
could it just be due to the fact that i bought a cheap router?
I thought these issues only occur when the router is connected,At least that’s what you previously
claimed,Please clarify
If these issues occur eitherway (With/Without the router) then the router is probably fine,Could
be a bad ethernet driver or spyware , If your using any bandwidth management programs like netlimiter
for example it might be the cause too
the problem occurs with both wireless and wired connections through the router. if i bypass the router, the problems disappear. problem on multiple computers: desktop pc, laptop pc, macbook
I see , Try changing those settings i mentioned above
