Iphone mail problem

I am playing around with my mail and I notice that when I go into it I will have emails but my phone doesn’t notify me when I received them.
I was wondering if there was a setting I need to use to have my phone alert me when I receive email from gmail or something…

It notifies once you open up the application.
Is the option Push activated on Settings?
Or try Backgrounder in Cydia to run apps in background even if you push home button
If in the settings app you have push notifications on, it will work.
