Windows on 512Mb Ram

August 5th, 2016

Hi,
I have an old desktop which currently is running on windows XP pro sp3 and it lags in performance and slows down, i am looking for an alternative which would be faster and not sure what windows version to choose.
The usage is basic internet browsing with firefox, reading pdf files and office word, nothing more.
Thanks.

I don’t mind but the issue is that the users who will use the PC aren’t familiar with Linux so i was just thinking about windows.

XP MICRO – the rar is about 180 megabytes, about 400 installed, does all you want up there (internet but no LAN).

TinyXP “MicroXP v0.86” is on the TinyXP rev11 ISO
“TinyXP Beast Edition II” is also on that ISO
“TinyXP without IE/WMP” on the TinyXP rev11 ISO may also work for you as it has a very small memory footprint (all 3 are well under 200mb ram usage on 1st boot if I remember correctly)
Answer #8
Thank you @ and @, will give TinyXP a try..
Appreciate it

Hey you do know you can construct a budget rig under 200$ (escluded cdrom and case). I know because i bought one with 250$, all i had was the hdd, no gpu (integrated on the cpu).
I wouldn’t install those crippled out xp versions.. why.. because they come with junkware installed and you don’t really know what’s in them. Operating system needs to be clean. You can easily turn off everything by ourself on a clean installation and then you will at least know that you are safe.
Try this
1. http://www.blackviper.com/service-configurations/black-vipers-windows-xp-x86-32-bit-service-pack-3-service-configurations/ pick barebones in you dont need internet, everything else will work fine
2. install tuneup utilities and set everything to maximum performance this will turn off unneccesary visual options
3. set adequate virtual memory
4. make sure there is at least 1gb free on the system drive (important!)
5. install only necessary stuff

wrong
tinyXP has NO junkware, and all the usless M$ crap is removed
Operating system needs to be clean.
and there is NONE cleaner than TinyXP (also stable & fast)
been using different versions of it for over 10 years and it’s still the best OS out there
Answer #11
I’m going ahead with TinyXP but i have one question, would LAN work with TinyXP, i usually have a shared network to share documents between the computers.
Answer #12

From the site:
Slax is free software: you can redistribute it and/or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) as published by the Free Software Foundation. Slax is distributed in the hope that it will be useful, but without any warranty; use at your own risk. The GNU GPL license requires that all source codes are published so others could reuse it, modify or learn from it. You can trust me, this is very good idea – without it, there would be no Slax at all. Slax source code is publicly available for download. Furthermore, Slax itself shares a lot of code with Slackware, whose source code is as well publicly available.
Slax Is Linux therefore freeware and opensource, no need of activation or keys or any of that.

Linux has its own version of the various programs available, just Google the software you require and add linux to see if there is a linux version available, if not than what alternatives there are.

You can also check the site
