WDTV or WD Live is what youre looking for http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136452&Tpk=wdtv

Nice, how do i just burn the avi to the dvd, or can i do that?
Answer #5
Yeah you can burn the avi onto a dvd. Use ConvertXtoDVD to convert it to dvd format. You can also hook your computer up to your tv, if your graphics card has a video output.

most hd tvs have a pc input – just plug your pc into your tv direct like a monitor – I have a 36” sony and I have connected an old celeron up to it – works beautifully, only thing I had to do was put a graphics card in because on board graphics would not support widescreen res – I even watch 100meg tv mkvs and 300meg movies on it and they look beautiful

I don’t know whether these are any good, they do need some research before purchasing to make sure there are no hardware problems but this is fairly inexpensive for what it does.

whenever i convert it to dvd, the resolution gets rediculously crappy, and quality is very bad.

You’ll be wasting lots of DVDs that way. Just get something like what Might_Marvel posted or if your can handle playing Bluray rips just connect it directly to your tv…vga, hdmi..etc

buy the hd media box from western digital it plays avi/mkvs and like 10 other formats on your tv in up to 1080p its the only thing i use… it wont cost u more than 100 bucks

Sounds like user error. Just plug pc into tv and it’ll be a lot easier and you’ll save time and money.

have you got a xbox 360, a modded original xbox, a modded wii or a ps3? any of them will play AVIs

VLC is the best videoplayer i think.

WD TV Media Player will play anthing, avi, mkv, mpg, mp3, flac, ape, etc. Just hook it up to your TV and hook it up to your external hard drive with the movies/music on it and use its remote control to search, select, and play.
It’s sweet.

To play avi files onto your tv u can just burn the files on a blank dvd and all u need is a dvd player which u most likely will already have

ALDI have a Medion Media Player on Sale from Sunday 24th Jan costing 59.99, I picked up the flyer last night while shopping. It’s one of those streaming devices which play most formats with Lan, USB connections and Card reader. It’s meant to have a Realtek chipset. Cheap but there is no mention of it yet on the Medion website so finding a firmware update could be difficult.

This would defeat the purpose of downloading an HD release.
