Watching x265/HEVC movies off of USB 3.0 but VLC is on SSD
August 6th, 2016
The movie is a 2 GB x265/HEVC mkv (“processor-intensive”).
Will I experience a “slowdown” because the media is on a USB? Would it be faster if i moved the mkv to the SSD? Can anyone explain how the read speed is affected when coming off of a USB compared to reading off the SSD directly?
install vlc on the laptop and play on the usb… usb speed can keep up with streaming a movie..
Yep, movies are normally fine off any USB, especially USB 3.
Google “usb drive speeds” for more info.
normally with x264, i don’t think there would be much of a problem but if any of you guys have played an x265 movie, you’ll know that fast forwarding/rewinding takes a few seconds for VLC to “re-buffer/reload” again (mainly a processor issue, i have an i5). I’m curious if anyone has had experience here with an SSD and a USB 3.0 playing x265 movies.
My machine has 2 cores AMD processor but plays x265 well from USB fast forward/rewind takes 1-2 seconds max same as x264 on USB…..maybe something to do with running on Linux ?

would there be much difference in that ff/rewind delay if that x265 was on your ssd as opposed to your usb?

On the ssd the response time is usually immediate.
