“USB Device Not Recognized”

I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook running Windows Vista Home Premium with 3 external USB ports and whenever I plug any USB device (so far I have tried 2 USB memory sticks, 2 wireless logitech mice and a maxtor external hard drive) I receive the above message.
In device manager (when my mouse and webcam are plugged in) I see the following:
Unknown Device
Unknown Device
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
USB Root Hub
Once double clicked on “Unknown Device” it states: “No drivers are installed for this device.” Yet even when I point it to the C:/Windows/system32 folder it still states the same message and is unable to find a driver.
Any advice on what to do would be much appreciated, as it really is quite annoying.

Can you point directly to the driver of the usb things you have plugged in? and see if that works

Thanks for the quick response.
I’m not entirely sure where the actual USB drivers are within the windows directory. Especially for such things as USB memory sticks.

You don’t need drivers..USB devices are plug and play…Windows can sometimes play up…Reboot and connect the usb device to a different USB port…

Thanks , but already tried many times, its been an ongoing problem since installing Windows Vista around 2 weeks ago.
But with this plug and play, maybe there are some settings I could play around with? But I have not got a clue where as I’m new to this OS.

Yea what said. you could try to connect to a different usb port? I’m not sure if that’ll work.

Do you think a clean install will fix the problem?

Yup, i have the same problem with my mouse.. I didn’t use the USB ports before.
It shows the same thing and i can’t find the problem

Do ya’ll have a powered (one with a plug for a wall outlet) USB hub you could plug into one of the laptops usb ports? I’ve ran into laptops that didn’t supply enough power to the usb ports to fully operate the usb devices plugged into them.
