[SOLVED] HDD not recognized
August 4th, 2013
I have a 500 GB external hard drive which has always runned perfectly but since today, when I plug it in, Windows 7 asks me to format it and doesn’t want to show internal files…
I have an excellent software to backup files on it but it’s not the problem, I would like to make it work again without having to backup or format it…
What can I do ?
Thx in advance !
Try using HDD Regenerator!
Trying it, thx for your answer !! I’ll tell you if it works
Are you sure I won’t lose files that are on the HDD by scanning and repairing with this software ?
No matter in what circumstance you are in, you should always backup your data.
How would you backup 500 gb of files when you also have a full HDD of 320 Gb and no other external drive to backup lol.
Anyway thx for your help, the scan’s very long and is going to take 5 hours…
Wow, time doesn’t stop to extend… it asked 5 hours, it’s going to take 8 hours instead… Anyway the software is repairing bad sectors at the moment
DSR. replied: Try using HDD Regenerator!
Lol that software is ~censored~. HDD Sentinel PRO is the best and it actually works.
Anyway the software is repairing bad sectors at the moment
Probably hiding the bad sectors. Bad sectors cannot be repaired, Regenerator hides them. Weak sectors (readable) are repairable, HDD Sentinel is the one to be used.
So should I cancel the process ? is it risky for my HDD to stop the process ? It is said that the process takes days !!
Thx for your answer !

Few days?! What is the bad sector count? Wait for a few hours and see if the time decreases..
There are 673 bad sectors recovered… Some forums says that it can last days but for me, the software adds a hour every time, it says 4 hours but in one hour it will say 6 hours…
Can I stop the process or is it risky ?

You can stop it anytime you wish. Btw how much data (GB’s) it covered till now?
262 GB but it doesn’t stop to find-recover bad sectors so it is stuck at 54.77 % since 1 hour…
So what should I do in HDD Sentinel Pro ?
mololo replied: So what should I do in HDD Sentinel Pro ?
Surface test, Type: READ Test, Data impact: Non-destructive.
Ok, currently doing it, it will take 4 hours, please try to return on the forum after so I can know what to do
I have many errors of Cyclic Redundancy Check during the process, is it normal ? And also 6 Damaged sectors and 8 Bad at 55.97 % of the process. Is it normal ?
Is it normal ?
nope
that’s very bad
Cyclic Redundancy Check
this indicates parts of the drive are unreadable
time to replace the drive
you can try file recovery software like “getdataback” or “active file recovery” to retrieve your data
and get the drive’s diagnostic app from it’s web site and see if it qualifies for warranty replacement if it’s not to old
Yeah I know that software but I don’t have a 500 gb hard drive to backup files, anyway, I will try to find one and backup my files, thx for your help !
Wait !! I stopped the scan and plugged out then back in and it worked !!! I think it has something to do with the scans ! Thx for your help to everyone !!
Wait !! I stopped the scan and plugged out then back in and it worked !!!
don’t depend on it
get the drive’s diagnostic app and check it to be sure there’s no problem
if it checks as bad and your able to warranty it you can request they send you a drive up front and you can copy over your files, then return the bad one
It’s a Verbatim, is there a diagnostic app for it ?
don’t see one
try contacting Verbatim and tell them you have a bad drive and see if they will warranty it
http://www.verbatim.com/index/formlist.php?action=display_questions&cat=0&general_id=1&lang_id=1&preregforms=
I don’t think that’s a Verbatim drive
more than likely it’s a Verbatim enclosure with another brand drive inside
when you connect it how’s it ID under “disk drives” in “device mgr” ?
They say Samsung I think, you must be right, it’s not really a Verbatim inside
when you connect it how's it ID under "disk drives" in "device mgr" ?
you check this ?
they say you can get warranty ?
Samsung is noe owned by Seagate

try the “Samsung ESWin” app here ^^
with it working now have you checked it with “Hard Disk Sentinel ” to see it’s health reading ?
Yeah they say 9 % lol but even for my new hard drive they say 47 %… i dont think its true
they
you try both and you are getting the same result
Hard Disk Sentinel is pretty good, usually if it says it it’s true
and even tho the drive worked the problems it had repairing the drive indicate a problem
even for my new hard drive they say 47 %
you check this with the drive’s diagnostic app from it’s web site ?
I checked with the same software always, HDD Sentinel, I really wonder if its statistics are good…
Do you think it’s a good idea to backup all my files then to format the HDD and copy back all the files ?
check them with another app, the web site one
HDD Sentinel give you the drive make and model ?
are they new enuf to apply for warranty ?
No I don’t think so but HDD Sentinel says now 6 health %, instead of 8 for yesterday…
Now the files aren’t shown anymore, the hard drive doesn’t want to open itself, so I’m backuping the files with GetDataBack…
HDD Sentinel says it’s a Samsung HM500JI
Now the files aren't shown anymore, the hard drive doesn't want to open itself,
now you know for sure it’s bad
get the files off of it and dump it if you can’t get warranty on it
Yeah I’ve found all the files on hdd with getdataback, once I’ve saved the files I’ll throw away the hdd if I haven’t the warranty and buy a new one of 1 To maybe
Which software do you advice to do a backup (a real save) of the HDD ?
Now the files aren't shown anymore, the hard drive doesn't want to open itself,
if this is the case the best option is what your doing with getdataback
if the files are readable you can try something like norton ghost or just get the new drive and do a direct copy
