[SOLVED]Yellow exclamation mark at internet network icon

August 1st, 2016

Hey,
I often get the yellow exclamation mark in the internet bars. (beside the clock)
When it happens, I can’t access the internet at all. But through phone or other computers, there’s still internet access.
When I click troubleshoot problems, it says the DNS server isn’t responding.
it gets irritating esp during online games, I get disconnected half way through the game.
When I off and on my router and modem, it gets back to normal.
The problem gets back after a while.
What’s causing the problem?

Answer #1
Try updating the driver, my sons network card was causing a similar issue.
Answer #2
^that. have you disabled any services recently? I had the same problem and found out I disabled the DNS service.
Answer #3
Ok thanks, Updated it, will see how it goes.
From google, they said to disable the iPv6, thats all I unticked
Another question, I have an empty ram slot on my new laptop. Do i need to look out for anything before installing the ram from my old laptop to the new one?
Other than being the same type of ram.
Another qn,
After a driver check and update, I did a bios update check It tells me this, how do I update my bios for free?
Image
Answer #4
as-long as the RAM is the same type of RAM and there isn’t a huge speed difference I don’t think it would be a problem.
you can update your bios with the help of google and your manufacturer. usually if say you’ve got a HP laptop, look for the drivers on their support page and it will show “bios” or similar.
good luck.
Answer #5
Ok thanks!
Answer #6
Unless you have a specific need to, ie component compatibility issue or an OS issue there is no need to update your BIOS.
Answer #7
What’s your network card (if you have one) …. might need upgrading to 802.11n.
Answer #8
Don’t bother with those Bios Agent shysters…
Go to your mobo manufacturers support website for any driver or bios updates.
If there is a bios update available, they will usually tell you what it does so you know if you need it..
Answer #9
Just flashed a new bios, fixed some fan bugs
For network adapter, it says I have a Atheros AR9485WB-EG and RealTek Semiconductor RTL8168/8111 PCI Gigabit Ethernet…
The yellow mark still appears and i get disconnected often, any other solutions?
Answer #10
Unless you are using an ethernet cable you don’t need anything ethernet. If you are just using a wifi router and you are not on a Local Area Network then disable anything LAN in your BIOS.
Also check: Control Pa/Internet Options/Connections/LAN Settings …………set that to auto.
Your Atheros AR9485WB-EG is 802.11g compliant ……….. You tried the latest drivers for that?
Answer #11
The drivers are up to date and the Lan Settings were already set to auto.
Haven’t gotten a problem so far, will update you if anything comes up. Thanks!
EDIT: I got disconnected again aand the yellow icon was there.
Answer #12
start -> run -> services.msc -> hit enter. scroll down to D and check your DNS service is set to automatic or manual, automatic I recommend.
http://vvcap.net/db/PCIrWdi61hPeGBxNIZnj.htp
good luck.
Answer #13
Its already set on automatic. Hmm
Answer #14
then you’re ~ censored ~ you sure your Internet isn’t playing up?
Answer #15

Uninstall the network card, clean out your registry then reboot and install latest drivers. Also, check whether your ISP uses WAN, WEP, WPA2 (or whatever, and don’t ask me cos I don’t know ) ….. it could be your card isn’t set to the correct protocol/setting.
Answer #16
I’ve done that already, Its using WAP. This is getting irritating getting disconnected.
Answer #17
Can other lappys or PCs with wireless connect ok to the net through your router without dropouts?
If so, then it might be time to try a new wireless card in your laptop..

Answer #18
Just to verify, This is a wireless connection, Right?
The fact you mentioned “bars” on the first post makes me think it is, But you haven’t
been clear enough about this to be honest. Set that aside, WEP can be cracked within 5 mins or less! I wouldn’t be surprised if some of your neighbors are leeching your connection. Better change it to WPA2/WPA (And change your password as well!)
Also, check whether your ISP uses WAN, WEP, WPA2
This has nothing to do with the ISP, It depends on the router settings!

Other can connect fine and stay that way. Its a new laptop, so its a hardware problem? , then I can send it for warranty

Yup, sorry I wasn’t clear. Its a wireless connection which keeps timing out/disconnecting on its own. I’ll have to off and on the router to make it work again. Troubleshooter showed the DNS server wasn’t responding.
I’ll change the password soon
Answer #20
Try resetting tcpip & winsock as explained on this post:
http://www.google.com?p=67646234#67646234
Also, It might be caused by RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) if other people
in your neighborhood are using the same chan as you are. This app will tell
you which chans are used by people near you:
http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
Make sure your router is set to a chan which is the least used by others (Or even use one that’s not used at all – Which would be best) If the problem remains, Have a look at windows event viewer and look for errors/warnings, You might find something related.
I'll change the password soon
Just make sure you change the encryption type as well! Again, WEP is not safe!
Its a new laptop, so its a hardware problem?
That’s possible (But is yet to be determined)
But even if it is, I don’t think it’s a good enough reason to send it for repairs.
You could simply buy a cheap USB wireless adapter to use instead (There are even tiny
ones which barely sticks out)
Answer #21
Try resetting tcpip & winsock as explained on this post:
http://www.google.com?p=67646234#67646234

I followed your steps and runned cmd as admin.
First step, after I typed in and entered, and got everything OK except “Resetting , failed’ “Access is denied”
Reset the winsock was successful

I tried installing the inssider and got this error. Installation directory must be on a local hard drive.
Couldn’t install it in C and D drives.

Just make sure you change the encryption type as well! Again, WEP is not safe!

I forgot the pass to the router login page. I’ll have to ask my ISP. That's possible (But is yet to be determined)

I already have on TP-Link usb wireless adapter. I’m trying to play games while connected on both Adapters. If that’s even possible to see if I get dc-ed.
But the signal strength I get with the USB is much lower than the built in adapter’s strength
Answer #22
First step, after I typed in and entered, and got everything OK except "Resetting , failed' "Access is denied"
Try doing it without the c:\ part, As in:
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Try running it as admin. Or use this app instead:

Your ISP is not responsible for your router’s password!
See if it has a sticker underneath it with the default user/password, If not, Just google
for it’s PDF manual and you’ll find it there, Then reset it and reconfigure as needed.

Each case to it’s own. Clearly, That particular one is not as good as your Internal, But that doesn’t
mean that all external wireless adapters are of inferior quality in compare to internals!

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
I still get the same error.

Try running it as admin. Or use this app instead:

Ok, I’ve searched and managed to get in. My current security is WPA-PSK with AES encryption from what I see in the page. I mentioned it wrong previously I guess.
Answer #24
I still get the same error.
That’s quite strange. Try it again without the resetlog.txt part.
I get this error
That error does make me wonder, You’re running windows in normal (non-safe) mode, Right? Also, Have you tried reinstalling inssider by running it as admin?
Answer #25
Its a problem with you ISP. It happens to me many times but nothing I can do but just wait for the net to get back or switch on and off the router.
Answer #26
you try disabling your firewall and/or A/V ?
Answer #27
I dunno if this helps in any way, but I changed my ISP just over a month ago from Orange to Plusnet. Whilst with Orange, when anyone rang us (only happened on incoming calls) on the phone the internet would disconnect most of the time, then when the phone was put down at the end of the call it would start up again. Since I’ve been with Plusnet I haven’t had any of that.
This has nothing to do with the ISP, It depends on the router settings!
Cheers Roberto!!! I’m no expert in these matters, whenever I have a problem I just stumble about here there and everywhere until I fix it.
Answer #28
Try to connect to the network with a Linux live cd to check if the problem is in hardware. If it works with the live cd, then you have a corrupt os install. If the live cd also fails, then the laptop itself is to blame.

Yeap not in safe mode, running cmd as admin and didn’t work. Even without the reset.txt, it failed and says access denied.
For inssider, I right click the file, but don’t see run as admin. I just see the bold Install text. That means run as admin right?
For Wifi Inspector, when I right click it, I see run as admin and I still get the same error when I click it.
PS, I’m using Win 8
Its a problem with you ISP. It happens to me many times but nothing I can do but just wait for the net to get back or switch on and off the router.
It hasn’t been happening much before. Now it happens too often and also to a new laptop. Thanks for the reply!
you try disabling your firewall and/or A/V ?
I’ll try offing windows firewall and trend micro av and post back later. Thanks!

Maybe so, I’ll disconnect my phone line from the router and see how it goes. Thanks!

I have a strong feeling its not the OS. Anyway, do you have any links to the cd? I tried searching and got totally different results. Thanks!

This one should be suitable for you to download with your unreliable connection

It will at least enable you to make an informed diagnostic decision.

Ok thanks! ftp://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall/release_candidate/
the rc1.iso is enough right? And by booting it, I won’t lose my data right?
Sorry, I’ve never used linux before.
Answer #32
Forget about D.S.L! When it comes to Atheros Wireless cards, You have a much better chance of it working *out of the box* with Ubuntu or Linuxmint:
http://mirror.ox.ac.uk/sites/releases.ubuntu.com/releases//raring/ubuntu-13.04-desktop-amd64.iso
http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/linuxmint/iso/stable/15/linuxmint-15-cinnamon-dvd-64bit.iso

Use this app if you wanna put it on your flash drive:
http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
Or imgburn if you wanna burn it to a disc:
http://www.imgburn.com/
Use the “write image file to disc” option.
After you’re done putting it on your storage medium of choice, You’ll have to restart
and enter the BIOS, From there, Set the first boot device as your optical drive (or flash drive)
depending on which one you used. If you don’t see your flash drive listed on the boot order (but there are other USB options) then pick USB-HDD. And no, You won’t lose your data! These run Live (as-is) without installation, So there’s no chance of data loss to occur (Unless you choose to install it too – But that would be pointless considering your intended usage)
Answer #33
Alright, I’ll check it out.
From other sites, I read that the bonjour service is causing a lot of connectivity problems.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/adobes-bonjour-service-seems-to-be-the-cause-of-my/55ce7a01-1a6a-4e10-96f2-be66428beab0
Does anyone know how I can remove it on win 8?
I can’t find bonjour on control pa or the services.msc ( they said it’ll start with ##Id_String.6844. but there’s no such thing there )
Answer #34
I suggested something small like dsl <50MB because op obviously has a connectivety issue. Otherwise I would have suggested kubuntu – 1GB
Answer #35
because op obviously has a connectivety issue.
The OP has previously stated that this problem only occurs with his “new” laptop.
And clearly, He has more than one computer! So he shouldn’t have any problems
downloading the distro’s I suggested (Which again, Are much more likely to recognize his Wireless card out of the box than D.S.L, Which is seriously lacking in hardware support and uses an outdated ker.)
Answer #36
Its ok, no need to argue over small reasons. I’ll put the linux on hold and try the bonjour problem first since many are having it.
Any answers to my previous post?
Thanks razor and Roberto
