[SOLVED] password protect rar file

February 17th, 2014

hey guys im trying to password protect a folder
by compressing it with winrar
but as you guys might know there are two kinds of password
one that asks a password when you open the rar file (ie you dont see the files inside the rar until you type the password)
the other is a password is asked when a file is getting extracted(i.e you can look at all the files and then enter pass only when extracting)
i would like to know how to do the first option (the cant see files before pass)
i cant seem to figure it out. please help

Answer #1
It’s simple,Right click the folder>>Add to archive>>Advanced>>Set Password
Enable the “Encrypt file names” box. Do note however that any data that hasn’t been overwritten
can easily be recovered and this method is not ideal for your intended purpose,You’d be much
better off using truecrypt and creating a container,Move the data to it,Then wipe the free space
of the source partition using bcwipe to remove traces of previously moved/deleted files,Whenever
the container will be mounted,You’d be able to access it like any ordinary HDD and wouldn’t need
to extract anything,When unmounted,It’d just appear as a file with random data.
Answer #2
Winrar > add to archive
Check the box in the Gen tab > Create Solid archive
On Advanced tab > set password, and check encrypt filenames

this is the correct way to do it

Sorry – you are all wrong.
1: You don’t need a solid archive to do that:
“Solid archives are RAR-archives that are compressed using a special algorithm that copies all the files to be compressed into a single file before actually packing them. Solid archives significantly increase compression rates especially when many smaller, similar files are being compressed.”
That has nothing to do with passwords.
2: The methods above WILL give you an archive you need the pass for to see the contents. If you UNTICK the ‘encrypt filenames’ box, you end up with and archive that will open and show the filenames, but youe have to enter the pass to view or extract them.

As Fluffbutt pointed out, creating a Solid Archive has nothing to do with password protecting files. You can read about it here:
http://www.win-rar.com/solidarchive.html
Just to clarify, the screens i posted earlier will give you the following result: When you double-click your password protected WinRAR archive, it will immediately ask you for the password. The contents of the archive WILL NOT be displayed unless you provide the correct password

@ Fluffbutt & bluerayn
Yes I know that you can do it that way, but presumably he is going to upload the file, so he will want better compression.
Answer #13
Use truecrypt then u can keep the file not only password protected but also encrypted haha
Answer #14
ok ok lol guys
the simple encrypt file names method was all i was looking for.
haha yea i know ive got more posts than brains
thanks

I agree that solid will give a better compression, but it works best when the files are all very similar (txt+html+css+etc, or jpg+png+psd+etc)
