[solved] London Visit – would like suggestions

February 1st, 2020

I got family planning to visit London this summer and was hoping to get some suggestions for them on where to go or what see.
I figured here would be the best place to get first hand information given the diversity. All suggestions/comments appreciated.
thanks

Answer #1
I’ve heard the transport there is expensive, never been there though
Answer #2
^not only the transport but everything is expensive. I suggest you tell your family not to bother coming. it’s a ~love~ hole. >kareem< will tell you as he lives in London. I’ve heard too many bad story’s about London and would never go there.
Answer #3
London has lots and lots of museums and galley places.. but it’s like any city.. crowded and expensive to stay, eat, etc.
If they want yo visit the UK, why not go somewhere nicer:
The lakelands area (Wainwright Walks country) is stunningly beautiful.
My own Northumberland has some 40 castles within 40 mile circle (it was Border Reaver lands – full of Scots vs English battles)
Or Devon/Cornwall for rural cottagey lifestyles..
I love the UK.. but London is just another city.. with city-sized problems..
Answer #4
Trafalgar Square
West End
Covent Garden
London Eye Buckingham Palace
Houses of Parliament

Make sure you buy a travel card, and its much cheaper if you buy it after 9.30am that will allow you to use the trains, tube, buses, trams. (depending on how far you want to travel will determine what zones you need, but zones 1, 2 are a must….)
I agree with the places that said, but they are so many more things and places to go and visit it depends on what you like?
Answer #6
Thanks for all the feedback so far. The interests aren’t limited to my knowledge. I’m sure historical landmarks would be of high interest though. It’s a new experience for them leaving the US and visit another country. London has been talked about for a while and now they’re wanting to make it happen. I’m not sure how long they plan to stay or how far away from London they’d be up to venturing. Can someone give a little more info on the travel card? Where do tourists get them? Is the card used for all public transportation? Is one card good enough for there stay? Will it expire? What are the rates for the card? Anything else you can think of to add is cool.
I don’t want them to be surprised by anything that may effect there stay. I’m sure everyone can understand.
@, can you give some links. I’m not sure if what I found was really what you suggested.

It really depends on what they want and where they come from.
If they are from mountainous rural US then more mountains is silly – go to London (or York, even)
If they are from flatlands, then the mountains would be nice, but also nice might still be an urban area with history (again, York = less compressed and populated then London).
But if they come from a city environment then a true holiday is getting away from that.
My own bias appears too – I don’t like places with shoulder-to-shoulder humans.
Also to note – there is a LOT more history and “places to go” then just London.
Hadrians Wall, for example, is a section FULL of history back over 2000 years!

Its probably easier for you to read this site http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/ticket_types/46575.aspx instead of me explaining everything
Tourists can get them the same places that we do, either in some shops, or at train/tube stations.
The card is used for buses, (trains, trams, and the tube (in the zones its valid for)) only.
One card per person, you decide if you want a day travel card or a week, month etc…
The cost of the cards varies depending on which zones you want on the card, zone 1 is the most expensive, but its the center of London where most the attractions are…
Some other places I recommend you should visit is the Tower Bridge Museum, The Tower of London, there is also London Zoo.

Thanks & for the follow up, and of course to everyone that contributed. I’m marking this as solved for now and if I (or they) have more questions, I’ll be back.
take care
Answer #10
I’ll offer them a coffee if they make it up to Morpeth, Northumberland.
