[SOLVED] install MAC OS El Capital on Macbook Pro Retina
January 22nd, 2020
I used disk utility to burn the DMG to a USB and that never worked because always gave an error.
Can someone please tell me how I can INSTALL EL CAPITAL on my macbook pro as a FULL restore like from scratch?
Thanks.
try using terminal via the following instructions (just replace yosemite and their image name with el capitan and your image name):
http://www.macworld.com/article/2367748/how-to-make-a-bootable-os-x-10-10-yosemite-install-drive.html
Afterwards just restart and hold your option key after you hear the “boing” sound and select your usb drive. The rest should be clear, if not you can always ask.
Hi. I got the flash drive installed with el capitan… but now I cant boot to it.. I shut down and hold the options key and all I see is the HDD to boot from. Any suggestions>?
PS. I don’t understand why it wont show up. I see it on the computer when I plug it in…. but in startup disk it only shows the HDD. My flash drive its a regular windows flash drive that I formatted via the MAC to have the El Capitan install. Is that a problem? DO I need a MAC flash drive (is that even a thing)?
Thanks.
What partition table does the flash drive has?
Are there two partitions? To boot it needs an Apple efi partition. Maybe this image is not suited for booting it.
Hi. So I went to disk utility and formatted the flash drive for a Mac. Wouldn’t that already make it that efi thing ?
I’m going to try others things but it sucks. Online everyone says it’s super easy just use disk utility and nothing works .
I have tried different things and nothing. This is my sub drive.
Can you start the installation from the mounted image?

Answer #4:
You might try resetting the pram on your mac. I understand that startup disk settings are stored there.
If the disk is bootable on other Macs, it stands to reason that it should boot on this one.
You can reset the pram by doing the following:
Shut down the Mac.
Locate the following four keys: option, command, p and r. You'll need them in the next step.
Power on the Mac, then immediately hold option, command, p and r. You need to do this before the grey screen appears.
Hold down the keys until you hear the startup sound twice, then release them.
Plug in the bootable USB stick, restart the Mac, and hold option.
I can't guarantee that it'll work, but it won't hurt, so it's worth a try.
Hope this helps anyone in the future.
