[solved] 2 year old pc showing artifacts

July 31st, 2016

I am getting artifacts like this http://~ Disallowed image host ~/2ni9m5i.jpg (not my screenshot)
I cant play any game it says that the driver has failed (codmw2, dirt 2,…)
My specs Windows 7 64 bit (installed 2 week ago)
4 gb ram (4×1 gb) mushkin
Intel Q6600 4×2.4ghz
BFG Geforce 8800 gts 320mb
Motherboard gigabyte p35 ds3
1 hd 500 gb and 1 hd 1 tb
The 1 tb hd is new and is only a week old buth none of the games or operating system is installed on it.
Artifacts started yesterday when i was playing codmw2 after i while it just stopped working but ctrl+alt+del still works. So its not a harddisk faillure i think ?
Nothing is overclocked and never has been.
What i tried : cleaning the case with a hair dryer (not the best way i now)
Drivers where original 195.62, than i installed 195.81 (beta and still showing artifacts) and now i have 191.07 and still showing artifacts.
So what is wrong is my graphics card history ?

Answer #1
It may be several things but I’m guessing it’s a driver issue. A overheating GPU might also be a problem, are these artifact always present or appear after some time of gaming ?

Hi, pc crashed again with a blue screen (forgeth a screenshot will take it next time). I restarted the pc and it was showing artifacts at the bootup screens.
Can you give me the best way to uninstall or to install a new driver. I only download it from the nvidia website and install.
I have taken out my graphics card and cleaned it very good (i think).
At the beginning the artifacts where only when i was playing a game. And now its always showing them it also says that the driver has stopped working and has been fixed…(yeah right).
Next thing i will try is a way to reinstall a driver if you can give me a good way.
And after that i will replace the card with a 5700 or a 6600 LE not sure if they are agp or pci e to check if its a graphic card failure.
In safety modus everything seems to work correctly (buth i now it dont uses the driver or the graphics card)

And its showing everywhere for me the artifacts not only in games. There only not showing in the safety modus.. So i cant run 3d-Analyze tool.
And i also am using crt 17″ screen. Buth i am using the screen at 2 pc’s and i doubt that it could be the problem.

How about your PSU?
Answer #8
How about your PSU?
I tested the psu with everest 100 % for 5 minutes not one artifact.
So it cant be that.
I am also thinking couldent it be the memory (ram) i already have taken out 2 sticks and it was still showing artifacts. After that i inserted a stick that i have taken out and taken out the other 2 and it was still showing artifacts. (i dont have other ddr2 ram).
I also have used rivatuner and setted the fan from the gpu to 100 %. It dropped 2 degrees. Buth still cant i play a game. I dont even see the temperature going up.
I have disabled the card in the confi screen.(so that the pc is working with the onboard card)
I dont have a spare pci e card so i cant try it. Now i want to test the memory so is http://www.memtest.org/ a good tool ?
Answer #9
I would say the card is dying if it’s artifacting in 2d mode, the rest of your system is ok, it’s just the gfx card.

I will bring the pc to an pc-shop tomorrow if i cant find the problem. If they sey its stuck than i will need to buy another card so any suggestions ? These are the cards that the shop have and are in my budget. ASUS ATI 4890 HTDI/1GD5 185.57 Sapphire ATI HD4870 VaporX,1GB 166.08 ASUS ATI 5850/G/2DIS/1GD5 263.49 ASUS ENGTX275/HTDI/896MD3 199.47 ASUS ENGTX260/G/HTDP 166.08 they dont seem to have the 285 gtx.
My choice would be go with the 275gtx. Is that a good choice or should i wait untill nvidia comes with there new cards ?

90% of the time it’s ram causing stuff like that to appear on screen. It could be the ram on the graphics card. First thing to try is simply removing all the ram from the motherboard and just popping it back in again.
If problem persists try 1 stick of ram at a time. Also rum memtest. Google it and download it.

90% of ram from the graphic card ? That cant be replaced right ?

I already have removed all the ram buth not 1 by 1. First 2, than i sticked 1 from those 2 back and removed the other 2. Dident worked. Or i must be unlucky and there must be atleast 2 memory sticks fault or its some other problem. Do you mean this program ? http://www.memtest.org/
Answer #13
Yeh, that’s the program, download and run it and report back if it finds errors.. I meant that 90% of the cases you see when stuff appears on the screen like this, it boils down to a ram issue. No you can’t replace the ram on the card.

Want to heard my simple solution?
Take it to computer repair shop. The guy will check it out for you whether there is an hardware should be replace or not..
The other cheap solution is test it with your friend is PC.. If there is any of them that willing to help you.. Though it’s times consuming..

So what’s the current situation, are artifacts still present from the start or they appear after launching games ? Btw monitor your GPUs temperatures after some gaming.
Answer #16
, take a good look at your motherboard especially those capacitors (like small fire crackers). Do you notice any of them being enlarged/bloated and rounded at the top? They should be nice and flat at the top and cyclindrical at the side. I had this problem as I tend to play a lot of games on my PC and due to the extreme nature of some games and overheating of the capacitors had become bloated and thus giving problems. Your problem might be due to this too. If it is the faulty capcitors go to an electronic shop to replace the capacitors and it is as good as new. Capacitors are really cheap compared to other hardware replacements. Hope this help.

How clean is your computer? Dust wise.
Do file check. Start > Run > sfc /scannow
Run MemTest (For at least few hours) and Hot CPU Tester Also one for GPU

Case is verry clean. I also had some problems previous month that it was just hanging when i was playing (buth no artifacts just that i stopped working) buth that was fixed with cleaning the pc.
I am running memtest already for an hour now and still no errors, i will let it test for another hour.
I will try the Start > Run > sfc /scannow when the memtest is done.
Anybody nows how to fix this problem i disabled the video card in configuration -> apparates. Buth now i want to use it again and now it says Code 43: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. How to fix that (also showing a yellow symbol)
Answer #21
Well the 8800 is about 3 years old and if its been used everyday for extreme gaming since “birth” :> its time could be up…
What PSU you got?
Post here what the shop quotes you ;>

I only have the pc for like 2 years and 3 months so its that all that a card can do ? (yes i am a heavy gamer buth still )
I goth the antec sonata 3 case with 500 watt.
And i am going tomorrow to the pc shop so i aint sure what they will say.

The computer shop is generally the expensive way, they will either reinstall the OS to see if it fixes the problem or will offer to change the video card directly without trying to sort out the problem and you’ll learn nothing, besides the cost.

No you should expect a far longer lifespan beyond the 2 years.
Answer #25
I’d go with the ATi 5xxx series because they have DX11 and it will be better in the long run even though there aren’t any games using it just yet. Also my friend had these random artifacts and he bought a new graphics card and it fixed the problem.

It is not always like that.. I have ever encounter hardware problem and they fix it with NO COST.. And I say thank you to him…
well if you say so.. That does mean you are going to wrong place..

ASUS ATI 4890 is a good graphics card.Or you could get something cheap for the mean time till the GTX 300 series arrives

Notice the word “generally”. I have been using computers long enough to know what a computer shop’s “repair service” does, I have worked with several. The probable steps they will take are;
reinstalling drivers
reinstalling the OS
if above two doesn’t fix it
sending the GPU to the manufacturer if the warranty holds
telling you to replace it if the warranty is void
They may or may not charge you for labor. They will most likely skip a lot of things they should look at.
Anyway let’s hope the OP gets it fixed.

Yeah i now its expensive buth if i cant find a solution i will need to bring it to the shop.

Is it worth the 70 more than the 275gtx ?
what a blown capacitor looks like

I dont see any that are splitted or blown.
Anyway thnx all for your comments the shop is open over 3 Hours, in the main time i want the card running so he can see what artifacts the pc is showing so how do i fix the code 43 problem ? Image
I checked all wires again i tried to reinstall the drivers nothing seems to help.
And is the ASUS ATI 5850/G/2DIS/1GD5 263.49 worth 60 more than the ASUS ENGTX275/HTDI/896MD3 199.47 ?
Edit: Back from shop i now bought the 250 gts sinds he hasent any bether cards in shop, gonna ask if may keep this card untill the next line of nvidia comes otherwise i will order the gtx275. Problem was something with the card.
