(SOLVED) SATA HDD not showing via USB…URGENT!

August 25th, 2013

Hi all,
I have a weird problem – I have a 1TB SATA internal drive that when plugged into the PC internally works and shows up fine…
but…
I removed it to put it into an enclosure for movies and now it won’t show up via USB? I’ve tried two different controllers – nothing.
Nothing in DISK MANAGEMENT or ACRONIS etc.
I even took it back out of the enclosure and it works in the PC??!
It’s formatted currently to NTFS, but I tried FAT32 and nothing.
Any help would be good as it;s for my son’s Christmas prezzie (along with a media player)…
Happy Christmas – here’s hoping you can help!

2.5″ or 3.5″ drive
got a link to either or both enclosures ?
you try them on a diff/2nd PC
if a 2.5″ drive try going in device mgr and under all “USB Root Hub” entries try disabling power saving

Ahhh Ed – very nice to hear from you!
It’s a 3.5 mate, I don’t have another PC/Laptop and the enclosure is a WD 2TB HDD – I took it apart, put the 2TB into my PC and removed a 1TB and placed it in the HDD. So it’s basically a HDD with a small circuit board controller.
Both controllers work with other drives….

Both controllers work with other drives....
after trying the 1TB and reconnecting ?
what model is the 1TB
the lights on the enclosure come on with the 1TB
it seem to be spinning just not reading ?
Answer #4
Plug the 1TB into the PC direct – works.

Plug it in via USB, lights up, spins up – shows nothing on the PC.
Tried all 16 USB ports – they work with everything else.
I have 2 x 1TB HDD’s and 2 x 2TB HDD’s – all the same – WD Caviar Green WD10EADS.

Do you realize that you need external power supply to power the 7200rpm drives? Give us a picture of how are connecting the 3.5″ externally.
Answer #6
Have you connected another drive apart from the original to that enclosure? It MIGHT be possible that it only works with the original drive.
Answer #7
Hi,
Thanks for the input – as said in the first post – I’ve tried two different controllers buddy, powered of course

the cord end of the drives, any jumpers or whatever, they all look the same ?

try a jumper setup 3rd down on the 1st pic (5+6)
have you/can you swap the data cord on the enclosure ?
Answer #9
Guys – I’ve tried so many things, I’m just going to buy another one and put the 1TB into the PC (it works in there).
Thanks for the support and info – I thought it would be something simple!
I hope you all have a great Christmas!!!!

Is it a media player with an enclosure (tried putting the hdd in that) or is it a small one that you need to connect an external to ?
I had a problem with an enclosure like that once – eventually got it working using a Y USB cable (ie two USB plugs into the pc and one to the enclosure) weird as it’s externally powered anyway.
