Netgear dg834G v5 bricked
December 18th, 2013
I have a Netgear dg834 v5 (Modem/Wireless Router). I was going to use it as an access point, so I updated the firmware using the web interface to version 6.00.25 located here:
http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6841/~/dg834gv5-firmware-release-version-6.00.25
Once the update had finished, it restarted but all of the Ethernet ports had stopped working when connected to any computer or switch. Wireless light indicates that it is on but there are no wireless networks discoverable from any device I have tried it from.
The router appears to start up fine and does not do anything like recovery mode. I have tried a factory reset with no fix. The only part I get any network activity is when the router first starts as if I can connect using tftp but I have since read that Netgear have disabled features like this.
Any ideas?
Turn the router on and plug an ethernet cable into port 1, can you connect to the router at all? You can also try a 30/30/30 reset to clear any configuration problems.
But from my experience, if you interrupt the flashing of firmware on a router at the wrong time, it is bricked, and at that point you can just throw it away. I have never personally had any trouble upgrading firmware or flashing new firmware on a router. Wonder how you managed to do that..?
Maybe someone else might have a suggestion, but a bricked router is a bricked router.
EDIT: You can pick up a used wireless router off your local Craigslist for cheap, just make sure they have the password to the router interface.
30/30/30 has been tried. Tried all 4 ports with no response. I’ve flashed/updated routers loads before but I’m at a loss as to how little support there is for the V5’s from netgear when it comes to this.

What kind of support are you looking for? There is not much anyone can do about a bricked router. Something must have gone wrong while updating the firmware.
A recommended tftp utility and a solution on how to re-flash the firmware or something similar, there are several ways for the earlier versions but nothing for the V5, the recovery tool doesn’t even work with this version. I have a spare Belkin router so I guess I may have to use that instead, I just thought it as a bit of a waste of router.
Some ISP require you to register the Media Access Control (MAC) address.
Try to spoof the MAC address by going to:
“Basic Settings” > “Router Mac Address”
Select “Use Computer MAC Address”
Click “Apply” This gives the router the computer’s MAC address.
Click “Test” to see if you are connected.
Its not for a specific ISP, Its one my dad had left over from work. It was a fully functioning router before I updated the firmware
Try this: (recovery utility)

Also, check out this: (guide to unbricking)

If none of those work, toss it in the trash =(

Did you forget to read the topic again? The router is bricked, he can not access it, lol.
you could try NFTP

*EDIT, have you tried to Telnet, or SSH, the router,
erase nvram
reboot
I have some old SKY boxes (DG834GT’s) sitting in my garden shed if you want them, I asked around once in work for one to try with my ISP as I have adsl 2+ Annex M, and the DGteam firmware is ace with them, then suddenly everyone keeps giving me their old boxes when they leave SKY
Tried all of the above , I can’t ping the router during the only point that it appears to make contact upon boot, I set the Ip on the computer’s NIC to manual also with no fix.

lol, I’m ok thanks, Il use a spare Belkin router instead tbh.

I can’t really think of anything else you could try – except use it for spares.
You can pick up a second hand one (or better brand/model) dirt cheap on E-bay anyway.
