Moving from one PC to another Flawlessly?

December 17th, 2013

So I want to move from this laptop to a new desktop. I need all my files and programs etc to work just like they do. Would I have to reinstall everything? Or could I just have an app move them flawlessly over as if I had just been on my old laptop.
Answer #1
What version of windows was installed on the laptop? I assume you got Windows 7 on the PC.
If it was Windows 7, there is a good chance you can just image the drive and boot from it.
There is a program that copies all your settings over to another installation, but I don’t remember what its called.
Hopefully sometime can can post that, until then I will try and find it and edit my post when I do.
Answer #2
You are best to reinstall everything.

Personally I would do what jock_juffalo has suggested and do a fresh install, otherwise you are just copying any errors to another puter.

That looks like one of them, there have to be more than one.
But as mentioned twice now, reinstall is the best way to do it!
Everything is configured properly, and for your hardware.

Thanks guys. I think I will just pull through and reinstall everything!
Answer #7
You should reinstall all programs and drivers. For files you can use windows backup utility.
Answer #8
Just for info – I was just putting a backup onto a new HDD using Acronis True Image Home, and it gives an option in that for it to be made “compatible” with any other system.
Answer #9
I would just make a backup disc image with Acronis True Image of the laptop an then restore the backup image of the O.S. I created from the laptop onto the desktop computer, just as long as the desktop has similar hardware an requirements, or better etc……..
