Low download speed, but high downstream connection speed? :S

August 6th, 2016

Hi guys
I’m having a bit of trouble with my download speed. I have an 8mb connection (I know, I’m not expecting the full 8mb) but I only seem to get 1Mb/s when my ‘downstream connection speed’ is much higher.
My ISP is Tiscali, a I’m not being capped btw.
My router reports my downstream speed to be 5856 kbps, a i used the line capability estimator here :http://212.23.23.177/ADSL/
a my estimated line capability (attenuation etc considered) is exactly that: 5856 Kbps.
Surely my download speed should be higher than 1Mb/s with that downstream speed? Even if it’s not the full 5Mb/s it says…
Test result here:

Thanks guys

1 mb/s is about right for your connection…
Answer #2
are you sure mate?
it seems odd though – i pay for 8Mb, have a 5Mb connection, can download at 1Mb :/
how come 1Mb/s is right then?
thanks for the reply mate
Answer #3
You have to divide it 8, so your bawidth is 8MB – 8/8 = 1 so you hsould have a download rate of 1Mb per seco.
Thats the rule i’ve been told, im sure someone else can explain it, but it does work.
I have a 4MB line so divide by 8 a I get my download speed of 0.5Mb per seco, which is what I get
Answer #4
my downstream connection speed is 5856 Kbps which is 5.8 megabits / seco
i only get 1 megabit / seco
that is what is confusing me
Answer #5
sure ill xplain.
that connection u have is 8Mbps[b=bit]
while the download speeds u see in download managers are in MBps[B=byte]
now we know that 8bit=1byte.
so thats why divide by 8 the bawidth in Mbps to get MBps.
hope that xpains it n makes it clear!!!

*sigh*
please read the thread
my downstream connection speed is 5856 kbps, my speed test result is 944 kbps
the difference between bits a bytes is completely irrelevant
thanks for looking though
Answer #7
have you tried speed test at http://speedtest.net/
(
from different servers a at different times as the results can varie greatly
post screen shot of best rtesult
Answer #8
That site is not accurate at all. I just did mines a told me I up at 433kb.
I up at 1.5 sometimes 1.9 if Im lucky. try using speedtest.net
Answer #9
i have, but i get really inconsistent results from there – i get like 32Mb/s sometimes, so i think there’s something wrong
i’ve tried the test many times a the one in my original message is prettymuch the same as the rest
Answer #10

got one that wasn’t horribly inaccurate

Answer #11
is this something new ? have you had much better in the past from same isp ?
Answer #12
no, its always been crap
i just got fed up of having to wait ages for downloads
Answer #13
have you got filters on ALL phone sockets in the house ?
a rest of router to defaults might help but you will need to have your isp user name a pass word other wise its time to complain like hell to your isp a good luck with that
Answer #14
i only use one socket, so i dont think this applies. i have however fitted a filter to remaining unused sockets incase, no improvements
i’ll try resetting the defaults later – i just wanted to confirm that it wasnt a problem with my PC before i went to my ISP about it
Answer #15

the difference between bits a bytes is completely irrelevant

No, the difference between bytes a bits is why your confused, a also the answer to your question.

Sometimes it depes how far away your exchange is, since the further you are away from the exchange, the slower it gets, also the better the package, the better it will se data from the distance, but you don’t just GET 8mb all the time, people are connecting everytime a it gets busier over the day … so think about that.
I’m not some expert.

I’m not too far from the exchange, i know they dont always take the simplest root though
I’ve tried in the middle of the night, middle of the day – all different times. Still poor.
I’m not expecting 8Mb/s, just something near the 5Mb/s my downstream connection speed is; rather than my 1Mb/s speed Thanks

You seem to have covered most options if your line is supplied by BT (not adsl just line network) use the BT Speed test to check it many Isp,s ask you to do this when you chase them Plus net here http://www.plus.net/support/broadba/troubleshooting/bt_speed_tester.shtml
tell you about it
