Does Hard Disk Crash Because of High Download Speed?

June 14th, 2019

Hello,
I just bought a dell laptop 2 days ago. has a 320gb hard disk 5400rpm.
I had kept movies to download in it for almost 22 hours. My internet speed is very fast, i can download a 700mb movie within 30mins. but today, the hard disk is saying that it will fail soon. I checked it with software “hard disk sentinel”. it too said the hard disk will crash soon. I just wanted to know if it is because of the high download speed and my low 5400rmp speed of my hard disk?
is it safe if i keep my laptop 22 hours per day for downloading?

700MB in 30 minutes isn’t fast at all? That’s like 3Mb/s.

Yes HDD do crash but it’s not like what you are thinking.

If “Hard Disk Sentinel” stated that your disk will fail, then take NO chances! Get all data and important info off the hard drive by transferring to another backup hard drive if you have one.
Next: l Dell support and tell them. You will have an automatic one year warranty (that is if you just now bought the Laptop from Dell) and they will replace the defective hard drive.
Your download or internet speed has *nothing* to do with hard disk failure – just retrieve any important data from the failing hard drive *at once*!

LOL, No this is not possible. Servers write around 1gb a second all the time. 30 mins download for 700mb = ~5mb or so.

wow, thanks for replying so fast guys! I thought my hard disk crashed because of slow rpm (5400) of hard disk and high download speed+continuous downloading…
Will do as you said. and it is safe to download 22 hours a day at high speed right?
Answer #6
yes its safe to do all that. Downloading wont affect it, only eat up space
Answer #7
hard disk crashes mainly due to warping of platters, when they warp it starts hitting the read head knocks it off alignment…just like the old vinyl record player when they warp it would move the needle up and down…with hard disks they are not suppose to touch when the metal platter hits it will ruin it.
hard drives hate heat if you leave it on for a long time make sure it gets plenty of cool air cause internal heat will cause your drive platter to warp…good luck

thanks for the reply guys!

Are you a digger? like keep downloading files, simultaneously?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!! Laughing Now, I’ll give you a chance to laugh at me… My avg. download speed for 700mb movies, is more than 4 hours.. how awesome is that?

Well its a Laptop, so basily it gets heated very easily, unless you could keep in pretty cold conditions or Get something to cool it, it ill affect your laptops health in long run Also its better if you can plug out the battery and use it plugged in with direct current , if you are going to use 22 hrs a day. It will just be less burden on the laptop but using that much amount of time for your laptop can cause problems
Answer #11
your internet really isn’t so fast, i can’t imagine that it’s the cause of your problems. i can download a 700mb movie in just over 2 minutes, and i regularly leave my machine downloading at that speed for several days a time. no problems here…
Answer #12
As said, i would worry about the heat it generates leaving it on for 22 hours a day… laptops arent made for that kinda treatment
Keeping it cool would help…

Your download speed is limited by your HDD speed. Unless the program you use keeps the file on RAM, and does not write it to HDD. (In that case, RAM’s speed limits it.)
Your download speed is unlikely to be limited by your HDD speed. Because it’s usually higher than your internet speed. (Also, RAM limiting your download speed is highly unlikely – like almost never.)
