Installing new HDD in Laptop

February 1st, 2020

Hey guys, I have a slight problem. My laptop’s HDD broke after a few too many knocks. So I decided to replace the HDD, and try out ubuntu, because I don’t have an XP disk.
Now, I installed the HDD okay – fits in nicely, was detected in BIOS – but it’s still giving me the same screen, which says:
“reboot and select propper boot device
OR insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key”
Now I have the correctly burnt ubuntu DVD in the drive, and still no dice.
What could be the problem here?
I have fiddled with BIOS boot settings, changed priorities to DVD drive etc, but no dice Anyone can help?

Answer #1
is there a boot menu keyon your boot screen (F12 maybe) from which you can select the boot device directly correctly burnt
as in burned it as an image, not as data
Answer #2
I’d say the disc has not been burnt correctly. Why are you trying Ubuntu? there are plenty of XP downloads on this site. I would rather have my gonads chewed off by a Pit bull than use that. Try re burning it again (as an image).
Answer #3
Agree with the above,You’d be best downloading XP,But if you insist
on ubuntu then burn it properly using imgburn:
http://www.imgburn.com/
Answer #4
yeah I used an image burning program – ISO recorder I think.
And I have tried selecting boot device directly from startup, and still no luck
All I can think of to do is to buy a USB flash drive, and try to use that to boot it.
EDIT: I burnt another disk using another program (IMGburn) and still no luck. Perhaps it is an optical drive problem? Downloading XP now to test.
