I would not waste any time with it. Athlon XP’s came out between 2001 and 2003. 10 year old computer is not worth the time.
I have an old Athlon XP that I use as an HTPC, but it can’t even do 1080p video (probably why I have not used it in a couple years, lol).

Yep, that was back when AMD was actually a competitor in the desktop processor market. Things are looking grim right now.

Get more money to update, or don’t upgrade at all.

The whole system is a bit of a waste of time IMO because no part of it is any good. Athlon XP’s are single core and although generally faster than P4’s are still very slow and use a fair bit of power, idling with the same amount of power as most Quad cores.
The Gfx card isn’t going to help with decoding video because the 6800’s series had a hardware bug which means they cannot provide hardware decoding assistance in any way. I have such a system, Mobile Athlon XP and 6800 Ultra, myself which never gets switched on. It might play some old games but that is about it.
You could buy a cheap used system which works a lot better.

AMD normally less working power verses Intel. But it can play games much more better than Intel.

For XVids especially SD ones, it will work fine, however for AVC video it’s going to really struggle on anything HD. Athlon XP’s only have 3dnow+ & SSE instruction extensions so are slow at decoding compared with newer systems, plus they are single core which makes it worse. Most decoders support >=SSE3.

AMD Athlon XP 2600+ 1.9 GHz
PC3200 DDR SDRAM 1024 MB
nVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 128 MB
i was playing games like far cry, call of duty 1 & 2, return to castle wolfenstein without a problem
also didn’t have any problems with watching avi or mkv videos or even dvds

Similar to mine, except mine is a Mobile (unlocked) Athlon XP 2500 with 2x512MB PC3200 and either a 9800 Pro AIW or 6800 Ultra, currently 9800 Pro AIW.
Now say how it gets on with HD material and not just MKV’s. SD is fine but HD and it’s going to struggle. I doubt whether that video card can provide any assistance although I haven’t checked. It would help if it could assist.
