Amd Athlon II to amd phenom

August 5th, 2016

My system is now running with amd Athlon II x4 2.8 ghz. It runs both 32 and 64 bit apps smoothly. This is an original HP package. If I will replace the processor with amd phenom x4 3.7 ghz, do I need to reformat and install a new OS?
Under Task Manager, I can see that the memory usage is 96%. This has only 4 gig of memory. Is 96% telling me that it is urgent to add more memory?

Answer #1
What are you running?
Must be a lot loaded to use that much memory!! Task manager can tell you what memory each process uses..
Check your PC/Mobo specs to see if it can support the new CPU..
If you just change CPU I think it would be OK with same Windows..
Let it do a ‘Repair’ if it has problems starting up.

If you just change CPU I think it would be OK with same Windows.. Let it do a 'Repair' if it has problems starting up.
If I will have problem starting up, where will I find this Option to Repair?
Or do I need to do some preparation before changing cpu to make sure that I will have the option to run Repair?
Answer #3
i think amd athlon and amd phenom both have am3 sockets which is good, no need for a new motherboard.. to answer your questions..
No need for reformat for a cpu upgrade..
I wonder what softwares are you running? having a 96% work load on the memory..
Does this 96% work load is your daily workload?
Answer #4
Some people like to completely reformat their systems when changing hardware to ensure everything runs optimally.
However, since you are not changing sockets, it is not necessary. What processes are the main cause of should a high memory usage?
