Help! My laptop wont start up

August 4th, 2016

My laptop has recently been displaying a blue screen and then restarting, it was rare that it did this so i didn’t think anything of it, but today it has done it and now just wont start up at all, it powers on but dose’nt go past the windows is loading stage, i just get a blue screen with white writing and then the laptop restarts, the start up repair tool dose’nt seem to be able to fix the problem i have ran it several times.
i have alot of university work saved on there so i’m desperate to get it working again, any help is appreciated, my laptop specs are as follows:
Packard Bell easynote mz35-U-005
dual core t2060 1.60ghz 2x512mb ddr2 memory (i recently upgraded to 2gb ddr2 ram)
80gb sata harddisk
running windows vista home premium

Answer #1
try taking out memory sticks and swap them over then reboot pc to see if that helps.
Answer #2
Thats a lesson to learn. One can never backup enough. Take out your RAM. Reinsert it. Can you take a photo of the BSOD (Blue Screen of Death)?
Use Squirrelman’s profile to find a thread with a load of amazing backup tools.

Answer #4
will it boot to safe mode ?
F8 menu has a “no restart on error” option that will leave the BSoD on screen
Answer #5
Boot up with your Windows installation-cd and select ‘repair’. It restores the system files.
Answer #6

Right mate what I would do as there is a lot of uni work on there is, get a xp installtion cd, go through set up but make a new partition about 5gb just so that you can install windows on there. MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT DELETE OR FORMAT THE PARTITION WITH THE WORK ON IT! Then once it is installed, back up everything you want from the drive with all the work on it. This will work as you are going to boot up on the drive with nothing on it just a little 5gb partition, and the other partition which will be the biggest will be displayed on my computer and it will have all of your work and stuff on there
If you need any help then let us know
Answer #9
definately memory fault on that bsod i would get memtest and test your ram, or do as i said earlier. swap your ram and see if that helps. if not it could be your memory has gone faulty.

If you can boot with a LiveCD of some kind, and you can mount your hard disk and a external storage device, you can also backup that way. Just Google for LiveCD and you will get some useful results
This mounting usually goes automatically btw ^^

i’ve tried swapping the ram around, even tried installing my old ram sticks, still no luck.
i want to have a go at this, but i havent got an XP cd, my laptop already came pre installed with vista and no cd, the netbook i’m using now has XP but also came with no cd. Where is the best place to get one from? Answer #14
Yer on ! Download one off the apps section. If your running low on HDD space get a tiny xp version hopefully you’ll only need it temporarily anyway.
Answer #15
did you try what advised will it boot to safe mode ?
F8 menu has a "no restart on error" option that will leave the BSoD on screen
and post the bsod error for us… bit unusual about the ram though, thought i might have nailed it as that!!! also if you get hirensboot cd i think there is a program on there called memtest which will test the current ram in there. but i am a bit puzzled on this… i presume that your graphics card is o.k and you have not updated it lately, as sometimes updates knacker the drivers up which can also create bsod problems. anyway post back what you will try and see if it helps.

Answer #17
ok
go to safe mode and in the search box put
eventvwr.msc
into the search box and check your error log for clues
it’s more than likely a driver problem
the most common is you video card driver
you can try going into device mgr uninstall your display adapter and see if it boots normally after that
make a note of what’s listed there before you uninstall it
and if you can get into safe mode you can recover/backup needed data that way

ok i’ve got the event viewer up, what should i be looking for?
Answer #19
red X’s under apps or system
or any reoccurring error

ok thanx bt will i ever be able to use the already installed vista again or will i have to use the XP that i'll have to install from now on?

I’d recommend trying the other methods first. But if you do install XP it will only be temporary and if you can get your current OS up and running again from Win XP then you can just continue using it and delete Win XP.
Answer #21
ok, i’m still not sure what anthing means, lol sorry for my computer illiteracy. heres ascreen shot of the event viewer if this helps? http://imagesocket.com/view/error46a.jpg

You might trying to reset the bios. Remove all cables from the laptop. Then Remove the battery. Wait a minute or 2 and insert everything again. It should boot now. Had the same problem a time ago. Fixed it this way.

Answer #26
Reset BIOs by pressing Del during the bootup sequence (before the Windows part – your Laptop manufacturer logo bit) and select Reset to default or something similar.
I’d recommend using Hiren’s Boot CD or Ubuntu Live CD (you’ll need to properly shut down your OS to get it to mount properly) to get your work off and onto a USB stick or whatever. Then I’d format.

ok so once i’ve reset the BIOs, i need to boot the computer using hiren’s boot cd (just downloaded it), and the once booted i need to format the hard drive??
Answer #28
No, Hiren’s boot CD is for recovery and some other stuff, like getting the university files off that you want. If you use miniXP or whatever the feature is called on Hiren’s you may be able to get them onto a USB drive. If not there are some file recovery features on there too.
You’ll need an OS disc to format the hard drive, but if you want your files you’ll be best getting them first.

ohhh okay thanks now i understand. so seeing as my laptop didn’t come with a vista cd in the box is there any way i can get hold of one from microsoft? will they charge me for this? surely they must be obliged to provide the orginal cd’s for situations like this?
Answer #30
go into safe mode and try uninstalling “McAfee” (error log errors)
Answer #31

Answer #32
Try removing mcafee as said , Also if you installed a new driver or app before this occured then remove that aswell , If you still have issues then hit F8
before windows boots and select “last known configuration that worked”
That vista recovery cd can help (If you had system restore enabled)
but still you should try ^ first
Answer #33
i’ve unistalled mcafee, and another program called malware bytes, both being the most recent applications i have installed. this has had no effect, my laptop still wont boot. i then tried the last known “configuration that worked”, that also had no effect.
after that the vista recovery cd, that had no effect either

Answer #35
a large number of boot problems are caused by video drivers and sometimes updates
try going into safe mode and uninstall you video driver
and also check you add/remove and see if you have any recent windows updates
Answer #36
have you got a spare computer, and a hard drive caddy, if so put your hard drive thats affected into the caddy and firewire it your working spare computer, and then you can save all your important files to the working hard drive, and then do a format of your affected drive!!
hope this helps.
Answer #37
i’ve managed to get all the important files off that i need so thanx for the help guys now i just want to get this laptop up and running again.
i’ve uninstalled the video driver, and the only recent windows update i’ve had is the MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB973688), but it wont let me uninstall that, i tried restarting after i uninstalled the video driver, but the laptop still isnt booting normally. a large number of boot problems are caused by video drivers and sometimes updates

right topgun, i know this is probably going to waste your time, but wont hurt to try this, shut off laptop, pull out all plugs, leads etc then take out your ram, reseat them ( and yes i know you done this already ) also take out your hard drive and reseat that. then plug everything back in again, leads plugs etc, then see if laptop boots up then. i can remember that i once took out a hard drive and the memory sticks and reseated them back again and the laptop booted up as it should. but i don’t know if this is your case though, but worth trying anyway. if not that then i propose a format of your hard drive and reinstall vista once again, providing you have the disk.

Answer #42
I don’t buy laptops any more. Mine just went out recently. I turned it on one morning and NOTHING AT ALL… Just a black blank screen and a few beeps. Took it to a company and they said the motherboard or the graphics card was out and it was gonna cost me like $300 to replace it, Hah, screww that.
