HDMI output looks worse than VGA (to DVI)

February 2nd, 2020

Hey guys,
I recently bought a R9 290, switching from a 5870.
My old video card was sporting a VGA to DVI-A for the 1080p monitor output, and everything was perfect.
After buying the R9 290, I was forced to switch to HDMI (because they supplied a HDMI cable ). After plugging it in, everything went quite strange.
The signal underscanned (which I corrected via catalyst control), but the image quality looks still very inferior to VGA, which theoretically isn’t possible. The image looks TOO sharp, as if there’s really bad aliasing. I’ve calibrated my monitor, and still no luck.
I’ve been scouring the internet for different suggestions, and I’ve found some ideas that havent worked for me. I’ve tried adjusting ALL the settings on catalyst converter, labelling the HDMI input as “PC”, etc. But nothing works.
Just as a reference, my card is R9 290 and my monitor is LG M227WD.
Any help?

Are you sure you are using a standard cable with a HDMI connector at both ends?
Is your monitor switched to the HDMI input?
Getting underscan and all that crap sounds like you got a VGA analog signal..
You should not have those sort of problems with digital.
What resolution is your vid card putting out…Should be 1920×1080@60Hz
Check with the menu on your monitor to see what resolution it is receiving…It should say Digital@1920×1080 also.

It’s a 1m HDMI cable, and its switched to HMDI 1, which I labelled as PC.
Monitor output says “1080p”.
Ironically, the signal was actually better as VGA than when I switched to HDMI.
Vid card is set at 1920 x 1080 60Hz, with some scaling to compensate for the native underscanning.

Dunno really, bit of an odd one..Try a different cable, might help.
You could check your monitor using a bluray , media player or another PC at 1080 and see how it performs.
Also check your PC into another 1080 monitor or TV.
It does sound like one or the other be faulty..

Could it be that you were just used to the inferior VGA image and thus the new one looks “too sharp” to you, since the VGA one was a bit blurry?

I took a screenshot and compared it on my retina macbook, and the quality looks completely different to whats showing on the monitor.
Hmm..
Found the problem:

The monitor you have is notorious for not working properly with hdmi on PCs, even LG has advised against using hdmi on that monitor.
just get a Full Dual-Link DVi cable and that will probably solve your problems.
