Every game I install, I install it without mounting

July 28th, 2013

Hi,
So everytime you download a game it asks for you to unrar to the .iso file then mount and then install the game.
But I just extract the .iso file and go to the “setup.exe” file and go on from there.
The games work, but I was just thinking why go trough all the trouble of mounting when you can install it just fine using winrar.
Thanks,
Shylar

I vaguely remember some games needing the disc to be in the (virtual) drive to be installed. I reckon it might have something to do with that.

Well, in a long forgotten era there were disk images, but winrar was unable to extract .iso files so mounting the images was your only way to proceed… People are creatures of habit, so even though the winrar way is a good (maybe better?) alternative old hardcore PC users here suggest the old-fashioned way. So, the bottom line is, you spoil a tradition

I do the same – I don’t even have any mount utility installed.
Never had a failure – unpack the iso to a folder and go for it.

Mounting is better because:
1. It’s much faster than extracting.
2. It keeps your HDD clutter-free, 1 ISO vs dozens/hundreds of files/folders.
3. If you delete the ISO and later on wanna burn it, It’d be slightly more difficult.
4. It’s a bit rare these days, But some games/large apps do check the label and if it doesn’t match, It doesn’t let you install it, Also, Not all multi-disc games allow you to specify the path to the 2nd disc when installing.
5. If you download an OS or anything bootable, Extracting it is the last thing you wanna do, For obvious reasons.

Thanks for the answers, I couldn’t help but wonder.

1 – yes, true, there is that.
2 – irrelevant if you unpack, install, then delete the unpacked file, keeping just the iso (which you burn if you liked the game).
3 – see above, you keep the iso unless you burn it.
4 – true, but there is also some stuff that detects mounting software..
Each to his own, anyway!

Extracting the .iso file will takes up huge space on your hard drive. Plus extracting + installing = Much more time consuming then mounting. Just get VirtualCloneDrive or Daemon Tools, a single double click will auto-mount and auto-run (if enabled) the .iso file.
