Economics Essay Questions – Advice Needed

1) Household savings in the UK and the US rose significantly in 2008. Discuss possible reasons for this trend in the light of theories of consumption.
2) Examine the consequences of economic growth and globalization for the environment. Where the consequences are adverse, what policy responses would you recommend?
I’m a second year economics student; these are both macro related.
I’m completely stumped for the first question, if you could point me towards what models/theories explain the rise then I should be able to go off and look them up and put the ideas into words.
For the second one, any thoughts on what points are the most relevant and if any models (specifically from growth economics) are useful for the question would be really handy.

Fair enough there’s a lot out there on the second question so I should be fine for that. But the first one simply searching theories of consumption gives me way too many unrelated and overly complex topics, I’m only a second year.

Thanks guys, although I’m not sure that Keynes’ theories are the answer to the first question.
