Cracked steam_api.dll with Steam running

July 25th, 2017

Hello there, a friend of mine recently told me that in order to run games with a cracked steam_api.dll steam has to be shut down entirely, so the steam_api.dll is actually used (and not the original one in the Steam directory).
My question is, what happens if you run such a game while Steam is still open? Does it make a difference if there were more files included, e.g. an overwritten exe for the game itself?

It won’t open the game, that’s the reason why you need to close Steam completely.
EDIT:
And as said bellow, it also depends on the game, but all games I tried, steam must be closed or game won’t run…..

The next time you start a game on Steam that is bounded on your account, it would seem to start at first in the Steam friends and then exit.
Close Steam and start it again to solve this.

I can not think of a cracked game that is installed in your STEAM folder. Cracked
games are installed outside of STEAM and dont touch your STEAM Files. So
in this case, it wont matter

note: some games will run if you do have STEAM installed but not logged in’
or anything.
depends on the games

Okay, thanks for the answers, especially the “must be installed in Steam-folder to run the default steam_api.dd” sounds quite plausible. There haven’t been any difficulties while Steam was open, so I wondered if there are other side effects. Great uploads tooth by the way! : )
