Best DVD players that play avi/mkv/mp4 files that are cheap?
April 11th, 2017
I have tried a few, but they tend to be picky. I wondered if anyone had had any good experiences with one that just plays pretty much everything without hassle?
I know its easier to play through a laptop/pc but thats not what i’m looking for so no stupid unhelpful replies please.
It has to play actual discs and not just use USB to plug HDD’s in.
Don’t have a great deal of money so can’t afford such units as OPPO, hoping there are good cheap alternatives out there, surely must be one.
Thanks.
EDIT: This is a question about hardware, NOT dvd playing software.
Power DVD No.1

Not software. Hardware.
As in an actual DVD Player Unit.
Thanks all the same though.
What about a media player instead?
EDIT: Sorry probably too expensive for what you’re wanting.
I know u said u dont wanted to have replies about media players, but nevertheless :
I converted all my DVD’s in a a quite long weekend to avi / mkv and played them back with the ASUS O!Play , wonderful device btw. nowadays it should be pretty cheap.
Another alternative is to have a game console 2nd hand , thnking about a playstation or xbox thing, from what I heard from my friends, that engine is quite solid and plays everything.
On actual DVD Players that support avi , mkv, mp4 etc. : no idea as I have gone to media streaming a good 3 or 4 years ago …

Not too expensive and they will pretty much play anything,i have a toshiba dvd player that is meant to play multi format via disc but its a hit and miss affair some avi’s will play some wont probably only likes a set bitrate range.Heres a link for a popular one plays 1080p and has a 8GB internal memory just transfer fron your pc to the device.http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sumvision-Cyclone-Micro-Media-Player/dp/B0073DN8HE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1379448729&sr=8-1&keywords=sumvision+cyclone

thanks though.
@ I was thinking of console but would very much prefer an actual dvd unit if possible. All my stuff is on 1000’s of discs so streaming would take too much to do.
Your best bet is a cheap bluray player.
You can get a basic one for 30 and a bloody good one for 70.
A bluray player will play pretty much all of the “normal” movie file formats.

Any particular brands/models?

Do bluray players nowadays play data dvds
Mine doesn’t but it’s 4 or so years old. Aren’t dvds done as data discs,as otherwise if they were dvds, it would be in dvd format.
What’s your budget?
about 30
DVD players, except maybe some rare cases, do NOT play MKV or MP4 (x264/AVC)
They are designed to play DVDs which are a Standard Definition format.
Some players are labelled “DivX” or “MPEG-4” and will also play AVI (or even MP4) files that use the DivX or Xvid codec.
As suggests, a bluray player could be the answer if you want to play disks and data from disks and USB as well.
Just google or check the specs carefully of something you like to see if it will do the trick. Theses players will usually have a USB socket as well.
about 30
It’s too low for your requirements; what you are looking for costs money. You could find sth at the 50 mark. With that price range you can only hunt sth used at eBay.
buy a cheap second hand console. you can get one for about 40. that way, you can use all its services and play the odd game if you want. ps3 is regarded as one of the best blu ray players.
ASDA have a decent bluray player for 30, it play most of everything.
A few weeks ago Asda had a Toshiba blu-ray player it could do mkv and avi only £33 it was instore only not online don’t know if you are near one or if ant stock is left.
Sorry for the double post i didn’t see the thread had gone on to a second page.

The basic thing is that there are plenty of options.
Cheap blu player, media player hub thing, etc.
One of these will generally do the job too – just watch the reports of the item/seller, or buy from amazon UK.

Thanks everyone for all your help, never thought of getting a blu-ray player, affordable anyway.
