[MULTI] MP4 won’t play on most players

August 6th, 2016

I notice many of the movie dowloads are in MP4 format now. This format won’t play on most media extenders like WD TV Live. Even if they’re converted to avi, they still won’t play.

This person is trying to skip the computer, I have had some of the wd media players old & new. They take too long to startup & they crash. I recommend a new bluray player which are less tempermental & they upconvert the movies you put in with a hard drive or disk. The only downside with bluray is if the quality of the video is bad it really makes it bad when it upconverts. I put my wd media player away & just use bluray

This format won't play on most media extenders like WD TV Live
Definitely not true. From WD: MPEG2/4, H.264, and WMV9 support up to 1920x1080p 24fps, 1920x1080i 30fps, 1280x720p 60fps resolution.
Now where things might not be working: A movie has two tracks, video and audio (I know – obviious but stay with me). Some folks have encoded the video portion with codecs including AVC, XVID, H264. They have then encoded the audio with an MP3 codec. They combo of the two will not play in most WD and like equipment – in fact, this includes almost all DLNA-enabled devices.
Grab a converter – say MediaCoder (free with the occasional nag if you do a bunch of encoding) for example:
http://www.mediacoderhq.com/
In the video section use a 100% bitrate ratio using H264 (minimal quality loss). In the audio section use AAC.
With these settings, every conversion has played without fail on a WD Live device.
