8gb RAM memory though only 4gb installed

June 4th, 2023

So I have this problem with ram memory where even though I have two inserted 4gb ram sticks, computer only recognize one as if the other one is broken or something? Is there any way I can fix this, check if both slots work well or is this system fault?

Answer #1
Try booting with one stick in the first slot. Any problems? Now swap and do the same with the other. Sill booting?
Have you got the sticks in the appropriate slots according to your MB manual. What MB is it?
Some boards like 1st and 3rd slots, some like 2nd and 4th some like slot 1st and 2nd etc
Answer #2
What does the bios read?
Possibly one of the sticks is not inserted properly…
Answer #3
If one stick is faulty the bios wont read it. Not in my experience. Hence trying one stick at a time and seating them properly, as lion suggests it may not be in correctly.
Answer #4
I have only two slots and they’re both occupied obviously. I’ve tried switching up the sticks though the problem remains the same.
Answer #5
Dude, did you try booting with only one stick to see if that stick works, then tried the other? (On its own)

8gb RAM memory though only 4gb installed
Well, I wouldn’t have a problem with this

I did not, seems like a lot of work. No idea what model my motherboard is
Answer #8
Well it seems, but it’s not, you just need to remove plug then a screwdriver to open the case and check at the RAM sticks. Piece of cake.

So you don’t want help. How is it any more work than swapping the slots ffs? All you have to do is leave one stick in slot 1 and take the other out, if it boots and reads as 4gb then awesome. Then do the same with the other. Process of elimination.
Bye.

seems like a lot of work.
All he’s saying is try 1 ram at a time. You have 2 4gb ram, yes? Well maybe 1 is broken. So.. Try the PC with 1. If that one works, try the other one. If both work, there’s your answer.
Answer #11
Check if the bios reads 8GB been ignored..
That’s the first thing to check before any other action..
Answer #12
Set the bios screen so it gives a text screen on boot up, rather than just a logo, and it should tell you amount of memory.
CPU-Z (freeware, Google it) can also tell you about memory and what is in each slot (SPD)
