You can’t downgrade to an older operating system unless you upgraded from the older one. You need to do a clean install (or dual boot Win7/Win XP). You’ll need to burn the iso file and boot with it.

You can even run executable files with compatible option of Windows XP Sp3 or older version of windows. Do as Dark Knight said to install clean Win XP. You can even find making your windows genuine through this link.

No you cannot just downgrade,You would have to format your main partition [C:] and make a fresh XP install by booting from it. Before doing this better put your
data on a secondary partition or hard drive so it wouldn’t be deleted
in the process,If your hard drive is not divided to multiple partitions
and you only have one then you have a number of options for backup:
1. Copy your data to another computer (If you have a home network)
2. Copy it to a flash drive
3. Burn it to DVD discs
Before i go into the actual procedure there are a few things
you might need to know:
1. You would need XP compatible drivers for your hardware.
If you have a laptop or a branded desktop (From the likes of HP,DELl,Gateway,Emachines,Acer,Asus) then get em from their
website,If you have a customized desktop then you would
have to determine your motherboard model & video card
using CPU-Z:
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html
2. You would need to reinstall all of your commonly used programs
3. Some people don’t know this but office is not a part of windows,It doesn’t come with it so if you use office and don’t
have it handy just download it.
I suggest you download all of these in advance
and keep em handy (On a secondary partition, flash drive or disc)
Now back to buisness,You would have to:
1. Burn the ISO image to a 700MB CDR using ImgBurn:
http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.2.0.exe
2. Reboot and enter bios by constantly hitting DELETE or F2 and from
there set boot device priority right,Set your optical (CD/DVD drive)
as the first device,Also look for an SATA settings and set it to IDE mode
or turn off raid,When all done just save & exit.
3. You’ll be displayed with “Press any key to boot from cd..”
you’ll have about 5 seconds to do just that then XP setup
will load
4. Just google for an XP install guide and take it from there.
When asked to which partition to install choose C:
and if you get a warning about an already existing OS
just continue anyhow and choose a quick NTFS format.
You will have to do the following steps.(Explained in Detail)
6> Follow the Instructions & Don't forget to FORMAT all your hard Drives. (You will be prompted in the setup if you wish to)

Your kidding right? Why on earth should he format ALL and
lose his data?
Answer #10
Thank you to all of you !
helped me out a lot, I will take this down and do this later,
when you said “I suggest you download the drivers & programs in advance” where do I get the drivers for windows xp ( dell computer ) ?
I want to get all the drivers before I install XP and put them on a dvd , but where do I get them from?
write back please
also,
when you said “Burn the ISO image to a 700MB CDR using ImgBurn: ”
does it have to be a CDR or can it be a DVD-r/+r?
Thanks a lot to all !
Answer #11
1. From here:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
You’d have to choose your model from the list or provide it’s service tag.
2. If you wanna make sure it’d work then yes it’d have to be a CDR,A while back
i was helping someone else with a similar issue and he burned it to a DVD disc
and it didn’t boot,But later on he burned it to a CD and it worked 100%.
Answer #12
ok thanks , that helped me !
I like the way you gave up your time to help me out ,
thanks again.
Answer #13

Well, I’m referring to a new install. Because, OP needs a single OS & If you try to install directly. You will get Dual Boot I.e 7 And XP. Which is the reason I’ve suggested to format. I hope you got my drift 🙂
Btw, Nice job mate!

From What I understood from your question, You want to have only one OS right? If you feel you can start off fresh,I would recommend you to format the drive. If you feel the data needs to stay then you have to choose to install windows xp to a partition. Note that windows 7 associated windows files will STILL stay intact and you have to manually delete them after you have to install xp (If you don’t format).
So it’s upto you
Answer #16
thanks you a lot, respect.
Answer #17
You should only backup and format the partition that contains your OS (Win seven).
