Purchaced or otherwise ?

Best Codec packs for what, for movies, if yes, then I would say that you don’t need it.
I have VLC and all works perfectly fine.
For any drivers – check your motherboard, google it, and download official drivers, if there is any.

The K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of Direct Show filters, VFW/ACM codecs, and tools. Codecs and Direct Show filters are needed for encoding and decoding audio and video formats. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your audio and movie files.

To keep WMP happy, I would suggest these codecs by the Shark as they have an interface to allow adding them to the dreadful WMP just as required!

Now speaking of real video players, I have found PotPlayer to be the best..Contains all codecs and works great, straight of of the box, so easy to get up and running.

For an audio Player that does it all, with lots of skins, sound processing, playlists and even some basic library stuff if you want, try AIMP3.
And if you want the best visualization, they managed to steal MilkDrop2 from Winamp..

Get your nice pictures and landscapes ready as Win7 has a great wallpaper setup where you can slideshow as much as you want.
Some nice gadgets too, you can Google for them, even though Micro$oft took them off their site…Guess thy couldn’t figure how to do it with their cruddy Win 8 !
If you need links to Win7 or the loader or other info then check this topic..

With the loader, Windows will be full “genuine”, so for an anti virus I would certainly recommend MSE…You might like to run Malwarebytes as well.
Good luck
