July 31st, 2013

Hey guys i am using Windows 7 and i will be needing Linux OS for Adnroid programing on my PC running with Windows.Anyways which version is best to use and where i could get it,thanks.
Answer #1
there’s some good ones around
the best for a beginner is ubuntu
http://www.ubuntu.com
you could also try KDE, it’s an ubuntu distro, but is made to look like windows
but it’s also very heavy on resources, compared to other distros
http://www.kde.org
LinuxMint is also a good starting point, though it’s not as popular as ubuntu in some cases
it’s also very use to use, like KDE
http://linuxmint.com/
if you’re still not happy with any of the suggestions I’ve given you, then you can have a look at the other distros

I wish you well on your future android endeavours
Answer #2
I would say ubuntu
Answer #3
You don’t need Linux to do Android programming as far as I know. You should be able to do everything on Windows.
Answer #4
Use virtualbox.
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Inside that use Ubuntu(the best so far i’ve used)

To develop for Android on Windows, you can download the SDK here:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
It even shows you how to install and setup Eclipse (free) for developing with it:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html
Also, I would suggest Ubuntu

Answer #12
nice thing about linux is the live cd versions
basically the desktop environments are the major difference in linux versions (gnome 2, gnome 3, kde, lxde, unity (gnome shell, open box, ect, ect )
download a few of the live cd’s and give them a try
they can be done old school burnt to a cd and boot (faster i/o)
or boot from a usb ( much slower i/o but no wasting of cd’s)
once you find the one you like then install it
the top dogs can be found at distrowatch
http://distrowatch.com/
fedora is good
mint is good
ubuntu is good, but the new unity desktop (ver 11) is buggy ( i use ubuntu 10.10 with gnome 2 it just works all day every day)
pclinuxos is good
try them out and decide for yourself

I Disagree very Much on the above mentioned point.
Right,
Good OS with GUI = Ubuntu
Good OS without GUI = Debian
Answer #17
Try openSUSE it is a lot better than ubuntu, fedora, mint or whatever. Or Archlinux if you want to set up linux yourself.
Answer #18
Try live cd/dvd option first, this will give you the option to find out your likes/dislikes from various os’s.
You could also make a usb installer from a live cd/dvd which acts just like the live cd/dvd but you have the advantage of allowing storage on the usb for installing application, downloading etc.
Each user has different needs, likes and dislikes.
For new users to linux give linuxmint or ubuntu a try first (make sure you use latest editions)
Android programming can be done from most linux os’s, with a small learning curve.
For linux distros this will help.

Hope this helps.
