what hardrive should i buy for my COMPAQ Evo N610c laptop?

January 21st, 2020

i bought a IBM/Hitachi Travelstar IDE/ATA-100 HDD Laptop Hard Drive IC25N040ATCS05
but i cant even format the HDD and when i try booting up it shows an error: “1720-SMART Hard Drice detects imminent failure (Failing Attr: 01)”
i tried updating the firmware with a bootable CD but it says theres no need to update it or something… im guessing i bought an INCOMPATIBLE hard drive?
please help me, im trying to add the hard drive that didnt come with the laptop.
so if all else fails, i guess i need to buy another hard drive, but tell me WHICH one. [only if we cant figure out why its showing that message, and/or if we know its an incompatible drive]
thanks!

but im not sure why the boot up error, [1720-SMART Hard Drice detects imminent failure (Failing Attr: 01)], is there? help???
UPDATE: i installed XP, but when i try booting up, it comes to a blue screen.

this a brand new drive ?
Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T. (sometimes written as SMART), is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures.
from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

if the drive fits the connecting socket it’s the correct type drive and a 40gb drive should be no problem for you lappy
sounds like you got a bad drive
the jumper set correctly ? as in no jumper (master) for the way your using it
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/tva/tvajum.htm
try these utilities to see if they ID the problem
* Drive Fitness Test
* Feature Tool
* OGT Diagnostic Tool
* SMART Defender

What do you mean by jumper?
you go to the link I posted
a jumper is a lil plastic do-hickey that connects 2 pins
there any on the drive ?
[what do i do now?]
drive is dead
nothing you can do except return it if it new, or apply for warranty if it’s still eligible
if your going to replace it you need an IDE (PATA) drive
NOT an SATA drive

ohh the jumper? yea, im pretty sure its in, i wouldnt be able to install windows if it werent haha.
not saying windows is working… cuz its not, it crashes to a blue screen x.x
and ohh okay, well i check on hitachi’s site, and its not eligible for return or something.
so im supposed to take it back where i bought it, which is: applepals.com
i checked their Return Policy page and i guess i have to contact them and ship it to them within 30 days of it arriving to my house, but its confusing… im not sure EXACTLY what to do, can you help me on that?

you don’t want the jumper, remove it if it’s there
im not sure EXACTLY what to do, can you help me on that?
us the “contact us” and e-mail them explaining the problem (dead drive) and ask to return it
and it looks like that’s a used parts site

mm okay well here’s my email to them [which is sent already] im new to this whole returning process:
order #*******
Hello, I'd like to notify you of a DOA for the hard drive [sku-1001171 item-IBM/Hitachi Travelstar 40GB 5400 RPM IDE/ATA-100 HDD Laptop Hard Drive IC25N040ATCs05]
i installed it into my laptop and it booted to an error: "1720-SMART Hard Drice detects imminent failure (Failing Attr: 01)"
after researching and testing the drive for errors on why, in the end it said it was because of "Excessive Shock"
I handle my computer instruments CAREFULLY [i cannot stress that enough]. The cause of the excessive shock was possibly through the handling of the box in the shipping process and would like to return it for a full refund.
Please reply ASAP.
Thank you for your time.

Aww, its a used parts site [ignorance on my part x.x]… what site would be a good site to buy my stuff? ive used -newegg- before but i wonder if there are better sites.
