What happenned to mp4 tv shows (now being posted as mkv’s)?

August 6th, 2016

Hi all
Wondering what I’ve missed: why have “HD” (non-720) TV shows switched over the last couple of weeks from mp4 to mkv?
Trying understand the rationale behind the “big” groups (KILLERS, LOL etc) switching?
TIA for any info.

Answer #1
Maybe smaller files.
I’ve had someone go the opposite.
Used to post mkv, now back to mp4
EDIT :
Just looked it up.
New scene release rules have come into effect.
mkv is now the choice.

Meh they are just containers, same codec probably inside, if you need to playback them to a certain device just batch renaming the extensions will suffice.
Answer #3
mp4 to mkv
just batch renaming the extensions will suffice.
most times, but not always
I use AVIdemux to save to MP4 from MKV & visa-versa when just renaming don’t work
leave video & audio set to “copy” and it just takes seconds for a 300mb file

you can convert a mkv to mpg in less than a minute with MKV2vob is you wanna go oldschool. mpg plays on everything.. i convert my stuff and they play on every tv in my house via usb no problem. or you can just hook your pc to your computer and watch everyhing on VLC or something where it doesnt matter what it is anyway.

This is what I use to covert Mkv to Mp4, very quick and easy as to use, no problems playing on game consoles or whatever you play your files through

thank god for common sense@scene. the b’~ censored ~ that is mp4 was a mistake and it is good to see that they now realise the error of their ways.
i’m happy about this
btw for people who are complaining, you could always get a proper media player which will play files correctly rather than resorting to inferior playback devices

@ you can please / beg all you want, it’s not going to happen unless the scene wants it too. All this begging happened when MP4 became the new avi because of the scene rules. Ppl complained for a couple months, nothing changed, ppl ate the change and moved on. Same thing will happen with mp4 > mkv Changing the container is pretty easy without recoding with an app listed above or one like “Rebox.Net”. Note to mod’s, Rebox.net is the actual application file name, available at videohelp
Answer #9
smaller file size main reason

I prefer mp4 too because either mkv won’t play on my tv or they play but I can’t rewind and only fast forward twice the speed… which really sucks when you forget and rewind if you are near the end of the episode or movie.
I tried converting with VLC and the video is ok but the audio is out of sync. I’ll try the 2 converters mentioned above and see if one of those works for me.

Rebox doesnt recode anything . From what i can tell the the couple times i used it so far is it splits the mkv file back into the audio/video and merges them back together in the mp4 extension. No recode takes place. File size doesn’t change (which usually happens on a recode).
Answer #12
I didn’t know that Chevron… but if I tried Rebox first and I’ll see if they play on my tv or not. Maybe what Rebox does will be enough. Otherwise I’ll try the MKV2vob that was suggested above.

Rebox doesnt recode anything
It does transcode the audio though to 2 channel aac with a very low bitrate.
i copied the method and made a program that does the job without ruining the audio and as an added bonus it cleans the file names so The.Thing.from.Another.World.1951.1080p.BluRay.X264-AMIABLE.mkv goes in and The Thing from Another World.mp4 is put out.
It also clears the metadata in the output file so MetaX can tag it without searching for the scene name.
All credit to the maker of rebox and google for the code snippets.
Ive been using it on rarbg for a half a year and it gets everything except truehd/atmos files with as little user effort as possible.

smaller file size main reason
MP4 & MKV are about the same file size if they are x264
x265/HEVC MKV’s are much smaller and the same or better quality than x264
TV USB
you check for firmware updates for the TV ?
Answer #15
Thanks all: wasn’t aware of the “scene” rules (rulez? change.
Looks like I’ll have to recode for the iDevices when away from home (ServeToMe does the job around home).
Appreciate both the explanation and the conversion links.
