Urgent help needed! Computer startup only shows background p

October 15th, 2023

My mum was ~ censored ~ around on the computer last night and now it’s screwed.
When my computer starts up I log into my account and all it does is load up the background picture with nothing else…
No items on desktop and I only got here by ctrl+alt+delete > file > new task
I’ve been looking up on google and I think it has something to do with the registry.
Any help greatly appreciated. If it solves the problem you’ll get 25 bucks through paypal.

First of all we do not ask for payment for helping people and as a matter of fact transactions that involve money are forbidden here.
Now, let’s get to your problem. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del–>File–>New Task. Type in explorer.exe and see if it helps you. If it doesn’t then insert your Windows disk and in the Task Manager start a new task and type in if you’re on XP, not sure about Vista and other OS:
expand X:\i386\explorer.ex_ C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
X being your disk drive letter. If that still doesn’t work, then with the Windows disk in place start a new process and type in “sfc /scannow” without the quotes. This will replace malfunctioning system files. Good luck mate ^_^

That’s a problem. Why not download the same version of Windows from here, it will work perfectly with the methods I posted above and without a Windows CD you stand little chance of fixing the problem. Good luck mate ^_^

Try System Restore. Restore at an earlier date (The date before your mom screwed it up).

Tried that also… set it back a few days and it’s still not working. I might go with ‘ idea of downloading another OS
I haven’t downloaded an OS before what do I need to do? Mount with Daemon or something? It’s also really hard to navigate without my desktop How can I go about extracting it?
Thanks

Use somethink like this..
http://www.google.com?t=549710&start=0
Burn it to CD using Alcohol120% or Nero using the “burn image to disk” options.
And if it won’t repair, you can use it for a format and new install

Answer #14
Try to create another user account and log in with that. If it works, copy over the files to that user account and delete the old one. Sometimes the registry gets messed up on the user account level.

I downloaded edwood’s explorer.exe, but…
1) I can’t extract it because I can only navigate through new task > brows and it doesn’t let me right click on a .zip file
2) I don’t know where to extract it to.
lol I think I might just give up and throw my comp away :@ Thanks for the help guys but I think I’m screwed.
Answer #22
It should be C:/WINDOWS/explorer.exe
It’s 1009KB in my case
see if you can find it there..
If it is there, try ‘running ‘ it either from start/run if that works, or from a command prompt.
I meant C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe
