Upgrading laptop RAM & HD

August 18th, 2013

I am not planning to shell out on a new laptop in the near future so I thought I might as well upgrade my current laptop to make it faster. My laptop is Sony VAIO CW26FG (don’t think it is available except in Asia)
For storage, I currently have
http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=04d26c9cf9c2d110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD which is Model ST9500325AS SATA 3Gb/s 500GB 8MB 5400rpm.
I plan to get
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd/ Model ST95005620AS 500 GB which is a hybrid drive with 4gb NAND cache.
For Ram, I have
4GB (2GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-8500F memory module by Nanya Technology which was the stock memory in my laptop.
I plan to get
8GB Kit (4GBx2), 204-pin SODIMM, DDR3 PC3-10600 memory module from Crucial
So do you guys think the upgrade is worth it? I’ve read reviews about both the Momentus XT and Crucial DDR3s and from what I’ve seen they look good. Any thoughts or recommendations?

forgot to mention in my post,
firstly for hd, 5400rpm is very slow, compared to a hybrid drive (7200rpm+4gb NAND) which would help a lot in boot time and to a certain extent in loading apps and gaming.
secondly for ram, i multitask a lot, having an extra 4gb and faster bus speed would certainly give gaming while running a few firefoxes a performance-wise boost.

Yes 7200rpm+4gb NAND and 8GB RAM Make faster your laptop.
*But Must Need GPU for newest Game.

plus i think the 32mb cache in the momentus xt would make a difference in gaming.
haha yea my gpu sucks, i overclock it sometimes to improve that lil’ bit

Looks good, but why bother with HDD? Might as well folk out money and grab a SSD, since HDD prices are too expensive.

500GB SSD are rather expensive atm…

even i need a little help in this section, i am running a 64bit win 7 on my lenovo 0768hcq, it came with vista but i’m running 7 on it, had 1 gb ram which i upgraded to 2 gb, its a 3 year old laptop. would my laptop support 6 or 8 gb of ram? it has intel centrino duo processor, and an onboard graphic card by intel, i also plan to buy a new graphic card, if any other specs are needed i’ll post them aswell

You currently have a 9.5mm thickness drive. MAKE sure you have enough leeway if you’re buying a thicker drive.

I’ve got the Momentus XT in most of my lappies and netbook, I can’t recommend them high enough, I’ve even got two in RAID 0 in this desktop. Don’t pay over the top though. They are expensive at the moment due to the typhoons they had in Taiwan.
I have found them to be extremely reliable, and in my desktop outperform the WD velociraptors that I had in it.
The normal price is about £85-£90 OEM for the 500GB. Where abouts are you in the world, I have a list of suppliers I have used.
*edit – although an SSD will beat them hands down, the price of an ssd is too expensive when considering the larger sizes.
