Upgrade vs Update?

Why would i need to upgrade to 3.0.556.0 (Newer version) ?
thence both the version signatures are same when you update
What benifits we would get by version upgrade?
So, The older versions are not safe when a new upgrade released? (Even it’s signatures are up to date with newer versions.)
Could anyone enlighten me in this issue …
Upgrade means getting a better version which has better protection or services.
Update means to get the latest data base or the latest driver, but not always gives new services and stuff.
Updates are for data bases and minor changes and improvements…Eg Nero 7.1 to Nero 7.2 and are normally free to registered customers..
Upgrades are new versions with major changes EG Nero 7 to Nero 8. Windows XP to Windows Vista and normally have to be paid for
