Starting a webserver

I have an Old PC that I want to turn into a server. I want to be able to host a site and have webmail. i know ill probably have to pay for the domain. but i want to get as much free as i can. what programs would I need to do this? also. what else should i know before hand?

After first sentence I know you should not start your own server.
Server must be fast, it performace is realy important! SO forget about turning your “old computer” into webserver.
But anyway…
To host sites, you need Apache, for PHP support PHP interpreter, MySQL database would be cool also.
You can find all that stuff in one package. “Xampp” is the option for example.
Do not install version with PHP 5.3.0, 5.2.9 is good to go
