[SOLVED] Overclocking Question
October 22nd, 2013
I manged to get my computer OC’d to 2.67ghz using:
CPU Multiplier -11
CPU Frequency – 243mhz
Dram Frequency – 486 (I wanted the 1:1 ratio)
CPU Vcore voltage – 1.4125v
Now here’s my issue, when I push the CPU Frequency to 244mhz, my computer will shutoff first before restarting. And do this every time. It will still boot, but it you try to restart it will do this.
So I’m wondering, is there anything I can do, increased Vcore more did nothing. I dared not push it past the max rating of 1.5v
The rest of the voltage setting, like FSB Termination Voltage, are auto.
I need to increase the speed of my processor only about 100mhz faster to be able to play the game. So is there anything I can do? I’m poor and can’t afford an upgrade.
Thanks.
EDIT:
Just so the updated stuff is up top.
Prime95 does not fail when going past 243mhz. The OC is stable. But I rebooted and it powered down completely, before powering on again.
So if prime95 says my OC is stable, why am I getting a full power down when I say restart computer?
My specs:
Motherboard : Asus P5LD2
Memory : Kingston 667mhz 4GB
Processor : Intel Core2Duo E4500 2.2ghz stock
GPU : 9800gt
Power Supply : Antec 650watts

Lol, there is your issue. Unless your ran can run at the overclocked speed, you need to change your ratio so you RAM does not overclock so much when you up your bus speed.

The RAM its self is 667mhz stock, I just under-clocked it get get the 1:1 ratio.
I’ve read post on forums were people got there E4500 up to 3ghz with slow RAM.
Well, I am currently using an E4500 with DDR2 667 MHz RAM. I am overclocked to 2.56 GHz. Going beyond this depends on your motherboard/ram/chipset capabilities.
There is not much overclocking on these system’s. I have seen some people get them over 3 GHz, but I have never been able to overclock mine beyond 2.6 GHz.
My goal was 2.9 GHz with a 266 MHz bus speed, but I assume its my cheap RAM that is causing issues. I have spent hours and many CMOS resets to try and overclock this more. It is just not happening with this hardware.
Time to buy a new system like me =D

If the game wont run on your CPU as is, a 100mhz overclock will not help you man =(
I dropped my RAM speed down a step further, tightened the timings up.
Booted, prime 95ed it and it worked. I let it do 10runs. The only thing, the voltage drops to 1.31 from 1.41 while testing. Should I be worried?
Oh, and 70mhz faster speeds made for a 5fps difference btw. The game seems a tad touchy regarding CPU speed.
That’s why I figured an extra 100mhz should boost me up that little touch I need.
I checked the time it takes a frame to be rendered on both CPU and GPU. CPU was 40ms/frame, while my GPU was spitting out 33ms/frame. I’m CPU bound it appears.
EDIT:
Ok, so prime95 does not fail. The OC is stable. But I rebooted and it powered down completely, before powering on again.
So if prime95 says my OC is stable, why am I getting a full power down when I say restart computer? Weird.
Since RAM speed and timings is not a factor, I just set the RAM speed back to 1:1. Still stable in prime.
That chip yearns for good motherboards with it’s 11 multi. You should easily get 3GHz and above on that.
The only thing, the voltage drops to 1.31 from 1.41 while testing. Should I be worried?
Don’t worry. LLC.

The powering down issues is related to your motherboard. One that likely cannot be avoided since it’s a design flaw in the BIOS.

Thanks for the info. So if I can’t fix the shutdown issue. Do I have to worry about it damaging anything by doing it?
You should first find out the maximum FSB you can get it stable at. <250FSB is pretty weak. And don’t worry about your hardware you wont damage anything.

Thanks for help and tips. Much appreciated!!
