[SOLVED] Need help with DIVX/AVI files

September 18th, 2020

My DVD player is a DIVX player. When I download a movie all I’ve ever had to do is use a very simple converting app to convert it to an AVI, burn it and watch it. For the last couple of years those that upload movies are all uploading them as MKV files. I’ve tried six different simple converting programs but 95% of the movies and 100% of Marvel/DC movies all end up saying “Video Format Not Supported” after they have been converted to AVI files burned to DVD and put in the DVD player’
Does anybody know of a converting program that will actually accomplish what I am trying to do?I am look for something simple where I can just drag-and-drop my file and click convert. I’m not interested in Divx to DVD and stuff like that.
Can someone help?

Well I know you can convert to Divx if you have a divx player, which is better than converting to a plain avi.
Will that work?
Note:
Regardless.. converting to dvd is best

I dont burn much anymore. I just stream everything I get to my xbox360 via Universal Media Server. When I get files like .mkv I use a program called “XMedia Recode” to make them an .mp4 that my xbox likes. I just open Xmedia Recode and find the setting that I like(only have to do the the first time as it saves your selection) then open the file in XMedia Recode. Highlight the file then go down to video tab and select “copy” in the drop down where it says convert. Then select the audio tab and do the same thing(select “copy”). I make sure I check both sides(input and output) so they both say “copy”. Then click add to queue. Now click encode. It should take like 30 seconds depending on file size(smaller file size = less time, Bigger file size = more time). It goes really fast. I know this is what works for me. Not sure if this will work in your situation or not. Just saying how I do things. Alternatively, You can try VSO Convertxtodvd found here in the apps section. It will convert and burn all in one. I have never had any issues with doing it this way when I burnt disks. If you are converting and burning blurays, then use VSO Convertxtohd(found in apps section also). I have used both with perfect success. I hope this helps you out. Good luck and let us know if you need anything else.

Your app is likely just converting the container type. DivX is a brand name for a set of codecs, avi is a container. The DivX brand h264 codec is called DivX Plus HD, and is commonly found in an mkv container. It sounds like your older player doesn’t support h264 encoding. You need to find the setting where it uses the old codec. If it’s not listed as DivX5, DivX6 or similar then look for the one called MPEG-4 Part 2.

Your best bet is to keep the DVD player for DVDs and to use a Media Player that will play all kinds of files , such as this..

If you must convert then some of the converters you have tried would probably work, it is just a matter of getting the output parameters right.
(Xvid (or Divx) for the video and Mp3 for the audio is good) and the resolution must be a good old standard one such as 640 x 480..
Here is a screenie showing the setup with Freemake Video Converter..

Image
Click on Video and select your movie.
Click on AVI and the AVI output parameters box will appear.
Select “TV Quality” for the preset.
Now you can point it to where it to ‘Save to’.
..and “Convert”!!

Should play on your Mother’s skiffle board, that one.
NB… If you are downloading Freemake, be careful not to get caught with adware or such and when installing use “Custom”so you can decline any offers of other junk!

save yourself the time and trouble and get a media player which supports at least mkv and h.264. they are pretty cheap. all you need to do then is to copy the video to a usb flash drive or you could use a usb hard drive which you can transfer from your pc to the media player.
your dvd player might not support the audio unless it is converted to mp3. it is unlikely to support aac audio. even how the mp3 is multiplexed into the video could be a problem. it may or may not support packed bitstream avi, it should do but older ones did not. if you use mediainfo on the converted avi file and compare what worked and what didnt you should be able to work out what is causing the problems. i do urge you to look for a media player to make it very much easier.
