[Solved] best way to Partition?

September 22nd, 2013

first of all, is partitioning bad for the health of the hdd?
and what is the smartest way to partition?
if i partition a small C: where I put nothing else but only install Windows on it, and then partition the rest into D: and E: to install programmes and save stuff, would this be a good idea?
would this mean if a bad sector occurs on D: and E: I can still boot Windows without any problem?

NO, why it should be bad?
slender replied: what is the smartest way to partition?
I use Paragon Partition Manager, easy to use, fast, good… Also, someone will recommend you Acronis, Hirens Boot CD etc.. It’s all up to you, but for me Paragon is way to go!

That would be crappy idea…
Make only 2 partitions C: and D:

C: Windows and programs
D: Backup (movies, pictures, programs/exe files, installations, etc…)
slender replied: would this mean if a bad sector occurs on D: and E: I can still boot Windows without any problem?
Bad sectors are physical damage to the disk surface!

D: Backup (movies, pictures, programs/exe files, installations, etc...)

that’s exactly what i did with my old hdd which died after i paused a video on D: , fell asleep and the next morning the hdd crashed so bad i could only load into Windows after literally 2 hours of the “Starting Windows” screen, and once logged in, everything on the desktop is gone, and a click took 10 minutes to respond.
actually i don’t know if it’s dead coz i took it out and installed Windows on a new hdd. it would probably work fine if i plug it back in.
anyway, i hv used paragon before, can you partition a drive where the Windows is installed?
Answer #3
use partedmagic
http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=downloads
it’s a linux distro, that looks heaps like windows and really easy to use.
burn it to a CD or USB stick, and reboot your computer with it in, since it’s a bootable tool.
it’s what I use for all my partitioning needs, make sure you donate to the creator, as well. (only if you use it and it helps you out, obviously)
you can donate any amount, and it will help him

LOL, and that happened because you had 2 partiitons?!
I didn’t read funnier answer in a long time….
BTW, install WIndows on whole HDD (that will be C: ), and after install paragon and from C make D:
Easy as that!
Why you making this complicated when it’s not!?

EASEUS man…. EASEUS! That is what you want. I used it recently. It has helped me greatly!!!
Answer #6
easiest method would be using Computer management within windows.

im sorry but that is nonsense, ive partitioned many of my drives and never had them crash because i left a video on LOL
it would of died because it was on its way out not because you watched a video.

really? u really want to argue with me about something I know I didn’t say?
you can read it a thousand times it is still not going to say “I think my hdd crashed because it had 2 partitions”, which is what you are saying I said…..

Answer #12
Op you should be ok, normally when 1 partition goes its just that one. If the whole drive goes then both partitions will go. But if your d drive goes, normally it will be ok for c drive.
But you should not really have a problem, if your that worried, back up your data and keep a copy of it, then your secure.

well it was like:
healthy PC–>paused video, fell asleep–>next morning, PC started crashing at the very first touch of the mouse.
so, since i am no PC expert i can only assume it was related.

oh, now i see what your problem is.
i thought you were being a BEEP, turns out you just have really poor English reading skills.
i hope the red letters help highlight the context in which the sentence should be read:
“u really want to argue with me about something I know I didn’t say?”
Answer #15
It’s probably better for your hard drive to be partitioned, less head movement, less fragmentations of the boot drive (with all the downloads interspersed).
I partition into 20 or 30 or 50g for windows 7, and 250g for games and downloads and another 250 for dvd’s and such (size to suit the drive size).
Then I install and setup and organise C: then acronis image c: ready for any fubars.

but you did say it. he read it 100% perfect. you said your HDD died because you had 2 partitions when you was watching a video and paused it. he answered with that. to me sounds like your being the moron :/.
anyway you might think your HDd is perfect but anything could be wrong with it

Another vote for Paragon from me. I use that when I do any partitioning and it works very well. Acronis I would never use their software again after many bad experiences and wasted time.
I would do things differently to what has been suggested. Partition before installing windows. I have many hard drives and received a RMA drive replacement today, many partitions and many operating systems all multi booting. Having a swap partition on a different drive to the OS should help speed things up, at least if the hard drive is rarely used for other things, hence little head movement needed.
Make a primary partition for windows, the size of your choice, between 30 to 50GB should be enough, although in the past I have used 20GB for XP but that got a bit tight. Then create a large logical extended partition in the remaining space. Make a folder on the partition called Program Files and install larger appz to there. Then when you need to re-install windows all you need to do is backup the documents folder and any settings you can import to the new install and then re-install. Making an image would speed that up.
Answer #19
What about resizing partitions? Any recommendations on a good program that can do that? I have a hard drive that contains 3 partitions and I want to make one of them larger and another smaller. Will that destroy any data?

It shouldn’t affect it. Paragon should be able to do it if you use a bootable CD such as an older Hirens BootCD v10.x.
Answer #21
OK Mighty_Marvel, I’ll give Paragon a try but first I’ll do a disk image of the drive just in case.

can you quote the exact sentence where i said i thought it crashed BECAUSE it had 2 partitions?
Answer #23
C: Windows and programs
D: Backup (movies, pictures, programs/exe files, installations, etc...)
that's exactly what i did with my old hdd which died after i paused a video on D:

2 partitions C,D
you paused a video on D: partition the HDD died the next day
now lets quit bitchin where here to help
